River Park (City Park)

Overview

River Park (City Park) is a welcoming community-oriented destination that captures the quiet charm of California's Central Coast. Managed by the City of Lompoc, this facility provides a budget-friendly camping experience for RVers exploring the scenic Santa Barbara County. Unlike high-density commercial resorts, this park offers a more authentic connection to the local landscape, characterized by its mature trees and a relaxed pace that reflects the surrounding agricultural valley.

Location & Surroundings

Nestled on the eastern edge of Lompoc, CA, the park sits within a fertile valley known for its vibrant flower fields and cool coastal breezes. The surrounding riverbed area provides a natural buffer from the city's main thoroughfares, creating a serene environment for an evening stroll. Travelers will appreciate the easy access to Highway 1, making it a strategic base for exploring the diverse landscapes of the Santa Ynez Valley and the Pacific coastline.

Amenities & Park Features

The park offers dedicated RV spaces featuring electric and water hookups, allowing for a comfortable stay while remaining close to nature. For those traveling in various rig sizes, there is a convenient on-site dump station and centralized restroom facilities equipped with showers. The grounds are expansive and include the following features:

  • Large playground for children located near the camping area.
  • Multiple picnic pavilions perfect for shaded outdoor meals.
  • Walking trails that wind through the natural riverside vegetation.

These features ensure that guests have the essentials for a functional and pleasant stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Visitors are perfectly positioned to enjoy the historical and natural wonders of the region. A short drive leads to La Purisima Mission State Historic Park, one of the most extensively restored missions in California. Wine enthusiasts can explore the world-class tasting rooms of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, while space enthusiasts might catch a glimpse of a rocket launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The city itself is famous for its vibrant outdoor murals and seasonal flower festivals that celebrate the area’s unique heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

River Park is ideal for the self-sufficient RVer who prioritizes location and natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for space to play and travelers seeking a quiet, pet-friendly stopover on their way to Jalama Beach or Santa Barbara. Tucked away alllllll the way to the back is this hidden little gem of a park. Now I'm just reviewing the park on this since me and our 1 year old like to go to ALL of them. It's got a little pond with ducks that you can feed. Saw some people fishing with their Littles at the pond as well. The park is nice. 2 things I wish it had is #1 shade and #2 rubber mats instead of the bark.... I can't stand the bark, but thats not stopping us from playing. I saw no trash and the equipment is well maintained which is a plus. We visit at least once a week. There is construction at the beginning of the park as you come in as they are upgrading the RV/Camping areas which is a LONG time coming but a plus for the community and our visitors.

It's now 2025, so I thought it was time to re-review this park. In the years since my review, positive changes have been made. They are slowly upgrading the camping spots, with the new spots looking fantastic! There is more care being given to cleanup & maintain the park again. Though lots of trees & park equipment are gone, it leaves open space to work with in the future. It also features the only dump station I know of in Lompoc, so that's very helpful. Thankfully without people there to harass them, it seems the duck population is coming back.

We loved staying at this park, the RV area may not be attractive but it's a very quiet place to stay and the park next door is nice. The park rangers are also friendly. The only bad part is if you're relocating you can not stay longer than 21 days, you have to leave for a week then can return. However, if you're on a temp assignment for work then you can apply to stay an extended amount of time without having to leave.

Nice park for the whole family! Lots of green grass to run in and the park is good for all ages. There's a walking path and horseshoe pits plus plenty of picnic areas.

Place is a work in progress. The staff is super friendly and great people, very helpful. They have started to remodel the place a few spots at a time. Been staying here for a few months now. They had about six or eight newly renovated spaces but wouldn't allow people to stay in them. Money wasted. Instead of getting people into the new ones and starting work on some more spaces. There is a dry river bed behind the park and it is a haven for coyotes, mountain lions, and homeless hoards. My daughters vehicle has been broken into twice now.
