Rocky Mtn/Aspenglen
Overview
Aspenglen Campground offers a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience just inside the Fall River Entrance of the national park. Situated at an elevation of 8,220 feet, this seasonal destination provides a peaceful retreat surrounded by lush meadows and soaring evergreens. It is an ideal starting point for those wanting to explore the high-country wonders of Rocky Mountain National Park without being far from the conveniences of the local town. The park is managed by the National Park Service and provides a tranquil, natural setting for those looking to immerse themselves in the Colorado wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is defined by its diverse landscape, featuring Ponderosa pines and Douglas fir trees that provide shade and privacy for many sites. The nearby Fall River adds a soothing soundtrack to your stay, while the adjacent meadows are frequent haunts for local wildlife. It is very common to spot elk and mule deer grazing near the campsites during the quiet hours of dawn and dusk. The geography here serves as a beautiful transition between the lower valley and the high alpine tundra found further up the road.
Amenities & Park Features
Aspenglen is a rustic facility designed for those who enjoy a traditional camping experience. The park offers no hookups for RVs, making it a favorite for travelers who are prepared to dry camp and enjoy a more primitive style of travel. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a bear-resistant food locker to ensure safety in active wildlife territory. While there are no shower facilities or dump stations on-site, campers have access to vault toilets and potable water spigots located conveniently throughout the camping loops.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Staying here puts you moments away from the start of Old Fall River Road, a historic motor nature trail that offers spectacular views and a slower pace. You are also a short drive from the famous Trail Ridge Road, which takes travelers above the tree line for breathtaking panoramas. Hikers will appreciate the proximity to the Lawn Lake Trailhead, while the shops, galleries, and restaurants of downtown Estes Park are just a few miles away for those needing to restock supplies or enjoy a meal out.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for owners of smaller RVs and camper vans, as most sites have a maximum vehicle length limit of 30 feet. It is perfect for travelers who want to unplug and reconnect with nature, as cell service is limited and the atmosphere is centered on quietude and conservation. If you prefer the sound of the wind through the pines over the hum of a busy commercial resort, this is your ideal mountain home for a few nights under the stars.

There is drinking water available in the bathrooms. They were pretty clean and nice. The camping area is pretty vast and wide. There are flush toilets which was amazing and sinks with water.

Lovely campground next to Fall River. Quiet and spacious but also close to Estes Park. Bathrooms were very clean with flush toilets. Saw some elk and deer.

The park rangers at Aspenglen Campground were incredibly kind and warm-hearted. It’s clear they care deeply about both the visitors and the park itself. Flush toilets and potable water were limited during the winter, but you could still fill up your RV water tank at the visitor center during its opening hours, which was a big help.

March 2025 visit : Camped overnight during the winter season, so no hookups were available. The sites are first come, first serve. There were 2-3 sites occupied when we got there around 11 am or so. Left some items at our site, got back around 5 pm from hiking and almost every site was booked. The ground was pretty level. Unable to do a review on the bathroom facilities as we have a bathroom in our camper van. We also heard turkey close to sunset! Sadly we didn’t see any. We stayed in 5 different campgrounds during our Colorado trip, even with no hookup, this was by far our favorite campground during our trip! We can’t wait to go back to Rocky Mtn NP during summer or fall season to check out the other campgrounds.
