Rocky Mtn/Moraine Park

Overview

Moraine Park Campground offers a quintessentially rugged Colorado experience situated within the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park. Located at an elevation of 8,160 feet, this campground has recently undergone significant renovations to modernize its infrastructure while preserving its natural charm. Visitors are treated to expansive views of the surrounding peaks and the sprawling meadow below. It serves as an ideal basecamp for those wanting to immerse themselves in the high-country wilderness of Estes Park, CO, without sacrificing basic comforts.

Location & Surroundings

The park is positioned on the north side of the vast Moraine Park meadow, providing a front-row seat to one of the most scenic areas in the state. The Big Thompson River winds through the valley, attracting diverse wildlife. It is incredibly common to see large elk herds and mule deer wandering through the campsites, particularly during the autumn rut. The surrounding landscape is characterized by massive ponderosa pines and dramatic granite outcroppings that define the Front Range of the Rockies.

Amenities & Park Features

Following recent upgrades, the campground now features electric hookups in select loops, a rare and highly sought-after amenity for RVers within the national park system. While there are no water or sewer hookups at individual sites, a centrally located dump station and water fill facility are available for guest use. The park also provides seasonal shuttle bus service, making it easy to navigate the park without driving a large rig. Other essential features include food storage lockers to keep bears away and accessible vault toilets.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here puts you at the doorstep of the Bear Lake Road corridor, home to some of the most famous hiking trails in the country. Popular routes like the Cub Lake Trail and Fern Lake Trail are accessible directly from the campground area. For a change of pace, the charming town of Estes Park is just a short drive away, offering local breweries, boutique shopping, and the historic Stanley Hotel. Visitors can also drive the nearby Trail Ridge Road for breathtaking alpine tundra views.

Who This Park Is Best For

Moraine Park is best suited for wildlife enthusiasts and active travelers who prioritize location over resort-style luxuries. It is a perfect fit for RVers who enjoy dry camping or need limited power, rather than those seeking full-service concrete pads. If your goal is to wake up to the sound of elk bugling and have immediate access to world-class hiking, this is the premier choice in the region. It appeals to those who value a quiet, nature-focused atmosphere under some of the darkest night skies in Colorado.

1st time here now that they have electric sites. RV camped in town 1st night...over $100. With the senior lifetime pass it's only about $28 here.

Lovely campground. Bathrooms were kept clean (although it was other campers who were making it their mission to trash them). The views were great, spots were nice and spacious and super close to a ton of amazing trails

Since my wife was out of town, my sister decided to come out for a week to keep me company. We spent Saturday and Sunday up in the park and had a wonderful time. There was a mixture of cloud and sun , so it was nice and contrasty (😏) for photography. On Saturday afternoon, we saw a lot of animals all up-and-down the different roads of the park. Such majestic animals. There is such a difference in the weather when you start going up higher towards Bear Lake. It seems like we had a little bit of summer mixed in with winter. Always something to see and enjoy when you get a chance to get into the park.

Hung out for a tailgate lunch after exploring Bear Lake. Had hoped to see some elk- but oh well, next time! Beautiful spot for a picnic. A good fishing spot as well, quite a few fishermen came and went while we were there.
