Rocky Neck
Overview
Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic offers a quintessentially New England shoreline experience for travelers. Spanning over 700 acres, this coastal destination combines a white sandy beach with diverse ecological features like salt marshes and wooded uplands. It is a popular destination for those seeking a mix of coastal relaxation and rugged outdoor exploration. The park is most famous for its historic stone pavilion, a Depression-era structure that provides a majestic backdrop for visitors enjoying panoramic views of the Long Island Sound.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the village of Niantic within the town of East Lyme, the park is easily accessible from the I-95 corridor. The landscape is defined by its dramatic granite outcrops and shimmering tidal creeks that flow through the marsh. A key feature of the surroundings is the scenic boardwalk that follows the curve of the beach, providing a front-row seat to the local coastal ecosystem. The area is also known for its active railroad line, where trains pass between the beach and the mainland, adding a unique historical character to the park's atmosphere.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Rocky Neck features 160 sites situated in both shady woods and open fields. These are primitive sites, meaning they do not offer electric, water, or sewer hookups, which is an important consideration for RVers. However, the park supports self-contained units with a central dump station and multiple freshwater filling stations. Standard amenities include restrooms with hot showers and a well-maintained network of paved roads. Families often appreciate the large picnic shelters and the expansive swimming area which is staffed by lifeguards during the peak summer season.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Nature enthusiasts can explore several miles of hiking trails, such as the popular Ellie’s Trail, which winds through salt marshes and forest canopies. Birdwatching is a premier activity here, as the marshes serve as a vital habitat for ospreys, cranes, and snowy egrets. Just outside the park, the Niantic Bay Boardwalk offers a mile-long stroll with views of the bay and easy access to local seafood shacks. For a cultural detour, the nearby Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme showcases American Impressionist art in a beautiful riverside setting.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature lovers and families who prioritize direct beach access and natural beauty over modern resort luxuries. Because the sites lack hookups, it is best suited for self-sufficient RVers or those looking for a traditional, rustic camping experience. It is a fantastic choice for travelers who enjoy birdwatching, coastal photography, and the simplicity of life by the sea. If you value a quiet evening by a campfire near the sound of the waves, Rocky Neck is a premier Connecticut destination.

🏕 Camped here via tent in early September. Not crowded at all. The bathrooms 🚻 at the tent campsites were closed, yet Porto potties 🧻 were located in the parking lot . 🚮 Garbage and recycling bins were located in the parking lot as well. Potable water 🚰 was available close by. Showers 🚿 were accessible by the beach. Each site has a fire pit🔥. Nicely maintained campground. Quiet. 🤫. I would recommend bringing a cart 🛞 bc parking was a slight distance from the tent sites. No outlets, 🪫🔌so here's your chance to immerse yourself in the present and put down your phone. 🌌 The beach 🏖 is a slight trek from the campsite. It's a pleasant walk though. You'll witness egrets, cormorants, ducks, guys and guls, Osprey and grebes. Bring binoculars 🐦⬛🪿🦆🦅. Also stay on the trail 👣, if not, I hope you aren't allergic to poison ivy☘️. The marsh is entertaining. Its full of life. The beach is gorgeous 🌅 The waves are subtle, making it perfect for families 🧑🧑🧒🧒. There wasn't a lifeguard on duty🛟. The water was pretty shallow for a long distance. There were some black flies on the beach 🪰 I didn't have an issue with them, but my buddy did. There is a amtrak train 🚅 that runs behind the beach. There were lots of small fish🐟, a variety of crabs 🦀🐚🦐 and snails 🐌. All n all, I'd come back here again.

A nice "short" beach, (from entrance to water) there's a boardwalk that's parallel to the shore that makes it easier to walk further down the beach. During peak season, they have a concession stand for convenience. There's also a large beautiful pavilion for gatherings on the west side of the property, here - theres an observation deck with a coin operated binocular viewer. FYI - for an easier walk back, (but a little further) behind the pavilion via a walk bridge over the railroad tracks, there's an access road that'll bring you back to the parking lot.

We enjoyed our camping experience, as well as our time on the beach in this popular Connecticut Shoreline destination. The campsites are plentiful somewhat spacious though it can be noisy due to the road and proximity of other campsites it’s also not the most private of camping experiences however, with that being said a short walk or drive to the beach is a plus. The beach is compact. The sand is soft a bit rocky when you get in the water but all in all and enjoyable experience.

We rented a spot to spend some quiet and quality time with the family. We had access to the beach as well and it was an amazing time. Being able to park the van next to the camp site was a plus so I didn't have to carry all the stuff over a long distance. My attitude was adjusted and made great memories with the family.
