Routt/Bear Lake
Overview
Bear Lake Campground offers a quintessential high-country experience within the Routt National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 9,700 feet, this destination provides a cool retreat during the summer months. It is a primitive, forest-service-managed site that prioritizes a deep connection with nature over modern luxuries. Travelers can expect a quiet, secluded atmosphere perfect for recharging away from the digital world and urban noise.
Location & Surroundings
Situated roughly 20 miles southwest of the town of Yampa, CO, the park sits at the edge of the Flat Tops Wilderness. The landscape is defined by dense stands of Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, with the stunning Bear Lake serving as a focal point. The surrounding terrain is rugged and represents the Cradle of Wilderness, offering some of the most pristine alpine scenery in the Colorado Rockies for those who enjoy off-the-beaten-path destinations.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities are basic but well-maintained for those seeking an authentic experience. Visitors will find vault toilets and hand-pumped drinking water during the peak season. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full water tanks and functional solar or battery setups.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. Anglers frequent Bear Lake and Yamcolo Reservoir for productive trout fishing, while hikers can explore the nearby Mandall Lakes Trail or the Smith Lake Trail. The area is also a haven for wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of elk and moose in the meadows. Non-motorized boating is popular on the lake, offering a peaceful way to see the surrounding peaks from the water.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for the self-contained traveler who appreciates a rustic environment and the sounds of the forest. If your travel style involves boondocking and a desire for silence, this is a perfect fit. It is best for those seeking outdoor adventure rather than resort-style amenities. Due to the narrow access roads and site sizes, it is most comfortable for owners of smaller travel trailers, van conversions, or truck campers.

Favorite paid place to camp in the flat tops area

Camped here for the first time. Been fishing there for over 20 years, but haven't been there for 9 years. Paul and Diane ( the host) do a great job taking care of the campsites. We stayed for 4 days. One of my favorite places to go to in Colorado. First come first serve.

Best thing about the place? No atvs in the area. Beautiful views. Nice campsites. Lots of hiking and boating also no motorized on lakes. Saw lots of wildlife. Fox bull moose muskrats white tail and birds. Someone saw a wolf. Hosts are great. Toilets cleaned. BTW do not reserve a site for friends. Not allowed. Makes sense in all first come first serve.

The water was wet, the trees were tall, the mosquitoes were flying, I felt very small.
