Salamonie Lake serves as a premier destination for outdoor recreation in northern Indiana, managed with care by the Department of Natural Resources. Covering over 2,600 acres of water, the park provides a vast playground for RV travelers looking to immerse themselves in a scenic woodland environment. The campgrounds are known for their spacious layouts and the gentle rustle of mature hardwoods that shade the sites throughout the summer months, providing a true sense of escape for those living life on the road.
Location & Surroundings
Conveniently located near Huntington, IN, the park is centered around the majestic Salamonie River valley. The surrounding topography includes rolling hills and limestone bluffs, offering a landscape that is both visually stunning and ecologically diverse. Its proximity to regional hubs like Wabash ensures that visitors can enjoy a secluded natural setting without being too far from modern conveniences and local dining options in nearby small towns, making it an accessible stop for cross-country travelers.
Amenities & Park Features
The primary RV camping area at Lost Bridge West features well-maintained pads equipped with 30 and 50-amp electrical service. While the park maintains a rustic charm, it provides essential modern facilities including clean comfort stations with flush toilets and heated showers. Travelers will appreciate the accessibility of the dump stations and water fill points, as well as the proximity of the campsites to the park’s various boat launch ramps and fishing piers, ensuring a seamless experience for those bringing their own watercraft.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The reservoir is a haven for water sports, offering ample space for boating, kayaking, and fishing for crappie or walleye. On land, the Salamonie Interpretive Center offers fascinating insights into local history and wildlife through interactive displays and live raptor exhibits. Adventure seekers can explore the extensive trail system, which accommodates hikers, mountain bikers, and even cross-country skiers during the winter months, ensuring year-round engagement with the outdoors for those who enjoy a more active travel lifestyle.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an exceptional fit for active families and nature lovers who appreciate a traditional state park atmosphere over a commercial resort vibe. It is particularly well-suited for boating enthusiasts and birdwatchers who want to be steps away from the water and diverse avian habitats. If your travel style favors quiet evenings by a campfire and days spent exploring forest paths, this Huntington gem is a must-visit destination that highlights the natural beauty of the Midwest.

This is my second time to Salamonie for hiking the Bloodroot Trail. The trail was in great shape after a bit of snow - no mud or bugs to contend with. The park was very quiet & we didn't see any other hikers that day. Nature Center is operating on limited hours for winter.

I've been wanting to go here for years my sons and their friends rent a pontoon for the day and we go out on the lake the reservoir actually you can see the dam you can swim in a couple of coves and you can drive the Pontoon past a couple of bridges it's really cool you can swim off your own pontoon if you can get yourself up out of the water onto the Pontoon after you get in the water but I had a great time and I'm going to do it every year from now on

We hiked the Bloodroot trail. It was gorgeous and very flat. Long stretches are beside farm fields and the heat there was more intense. The visitor center was closed so don't count on being able to use the restroom or refill water bottles there unless you happen to run into a ranger.

We stayed on the Bloodroot Trail near the South trail head by Mt. Etna. A wonderful campsite that worked great for our hammocks! The views from Site #6 are our favorite! The vault (pit) toilet is about a mile away by the boat launch. The ground is really tough to dig for a cat hole. Enjoy your stay!

I stayed overnight in the horseman campground. Everything was beautiful and well-maintained. Park staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Trails were stunning. Absolutely will come back.
