San Bernardino/Hanna Flat

Overview

San Bernardino/Hanna Flat, commonly known as Hanna Flat Campground, offers a tranquil mountain retreat for RVers who value nature over commercial amenities. Located just a few miles north of Fawnskin, California, this campground provides a scenic backdrop of towering Jeffrey pines and ancient oaks. It serves as a quiet alternative to the busier south shore of the lake, offering a high-altitude wilderness experience that captures the true essence of the San Bernardino Mountains. The air is crisp, the nights are dark, and the atmosphere is perfect for those looking to disconnect.

Location & Surroundings

The park is perched at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, providing much-needed relief from the Southern California heat during summer months. The north shore location near Big Bear Lake places travelers in a secluded environment characterized by boulder-strewn landscapes and dense forest cover. While the drive into the park is scenic, it involves traveling on Hanna Flat Road, which is narrow and unpaved in sections, adding to the feeling of being tucked away in a hidden corner of the forest.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service site, the focus here is on dry camping and self-sufficiency. The park features a selection of basic facilities designed for a self-contained stay:

  • Gravel or dirt parking pads capable of accommodating smaller RVs and trailers.
  • Fire rings and picnic tables provided at every individual site.
  • Access to vault toilets and seasonal potable drinking water.

There are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available at the sites, making this an ideal spot for those who enjoy a primitive camping style surrounded by natural sounds rather than highway noise.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activity starting directly from the campground. Visitors can enjoy a variety of recreational activities within a short distance:

  • Hiking and mountain biking on the adjacent Hanna Flat Trail system.
  • Boating and fishing at the nearby marinas on Big Bear Lake.
  • Exploring the quiet, historic charm of downtown Fawnskin for local character.

The trek to Gray’s Peak is particularly recommended for those seeking panoramic vistas of the entire Big Bear valley and the shimmering water below.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and small-rig owners who want to escape the crowds of traditional RV resorts. It is perfectly suited for van lifers, truck campers, and smaller travel trailers looking for a serene forest setting. Because of the tighter turns and specific site dimensions, it appeals most to travelers who prefer a back-to-basics adventure and don’t mind trading utility hookups for a night under a brilliant, star-filled sky.

Hanna Flats is a great campground for those looking to really get back to nature. Beautiful area! ✨️ Clean campground. Really great sites. Ours had a huge, beautiful, oak tree! Prime spot. Lots of outdoor enthusiasts like mountain bikers, motorcyclist, and 4x4 clubs have trails to explore outside of camp. Located in Fawnskin and very close to Big Bear lake. So much to do! Just be aware, there are no bathrooms as you know it. No flush toilets or sinks. Only Vault toilets and spigots outside. This is true camping! 🏕.

Great campground not to far from Fawnskin. Lots a tree cover and a heart hike or bike to Greys Peak.

We go every summer as a family. Sometimes, twice. We were just there this past weekend and weren't disappointed. Never are. We stay in the same spot every time. As you can see, there's plenty to do. Especially off-roading. The color of the truck is gray in case you're wondering. There's also open shooting in designated areas so long as there's no heat restrictions in place.

Definitely would stay again! More wildlife compared to camp serrano in big bear. (Bugs) but werent a problem at all. Camp host in site 50 was very passionate about her job and the wildlife. We stayed at 68/69 double site for 8 people. 3 tents. 2 4 person tents and 1 6 person tent.

Perfect spot for tent camping! Highly recommend this campground if you’re looking for a place that feels like you secluded but is still within 20 minutes driving distance of creature comforts in town. The surroundings are beautiful, the camp host was very helpful, and each reserved camping site is in close proximity of restrooms and potable water. The 2 mile dirt road off the main road is part of the charm!
