San Bernardino/Serrano

Overview

The San Bernardino/Serrano Campground serves as a premier destination for those looking to experience the San Bernardino National Forest without sacrificing modern conveniences. Located on the northern shore of Big Bear Lake, this park offers a balanced mix of wooded seclusion and accessibility. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it provides a high-quality camping experience within a mature pine and oak forest. It is one of the few campgrounds in the area that provides utility hookups, making it a sought-after location for RV travelers exploring the San Bernardino Mountains.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near the quiet town of Fawnskin, the park offers a peaceful alternative to the busier south shore of Big Bear. The campground sits at an elevation of approximately 6,700 feet, providing crisp mountain air and shade from towering ponderosa pines. Guests are just a short walk away from the pristine shoreline of Big Bear Lake, where the views of the surrounding peaks are breathtaking. The immediate area is defined by its rugged beauty and the tranquil atmosphere of the national forest.

Amenities & Park Features

While many forest service sites are primitive, Serrano offers electric and water hookups at many of its sites, catering specifically to the RV community. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for traditional campfire evenings. The park features paved interior roads and pads, which facilitate easier maneuvering for larger rigs. On-site facilities include flush toilets, drinking water, and hot showers, along with a convenient dump station located near the entrance for guests to use after their stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, as the Alpine Pedal Path runs right past the campground, offering a paved trail perfect for cycling or walking along the lake. Hikers can easily access the Cougar Crest Trail nearby, which connects to the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail for more strenuous excursions. The Big Bear Discovery Center is within walking distance, providing educational exhibits and guided tours. Of course, the lake itself is the main draw for those interested in fishing, kayaking, or simple lakeside relaxation.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for RVers who prioritize natural scenery over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for families and outdoor enthusiasts who want an authentic forest experience while still having access to electricity. Because of its prime lake proximity, it is also a top choice for those who enjoy water sports and high-altitude hiking. If you are looking for a quiet retreat that captures the essence of the California mountains, Serrano is an excellent home base for your adventure.

CONS: Showers were not so great. I had some unreasonably loud neighbors. Unattended kids and families were continuously walking through my site. PROS: Plenty of spots to hang my hammock Great cell service to get work done Close to town and easy bikeway access

I had the BEST time at Serrano Campground. The site is located on the north shore (10 min drive from Big Bear). Cougar Crest Trail is in walking distance from the campgrounds (highly recommend if you are looking for a nice hike), and there is a walking/biking path that takes you all the way to the lake. The campgrounds were clean and in great shape. I was shocked with with how clean the restrooms and showers were. A small win is that the showers are free to use so you don't need to lug around a heavy coin purse. Fire wood is available for sale on the grounds if needed and there are park rangers that monitor the entrances which made me feel safe. There are pumps around the sites with water that can be used for drinking or to wash your dishes. The campground is at a distance where it feels like you are out of the city, but there is still cell reception. I will definitely be coming back.

This is a really nice campground. The people are friendly and the place is clean and well maintained. They have free hot showers and they even sell wood at the camp entrance which is really convenient. The campground is very peaceful. Some large groups were a little loud and allowed to have fun without being bothered. It was a very chill atmosphere which is what you want when camping.

2nd time staying at this campground. We enjoyed it a lot 2 years/2 summers ago and returning 08.13-15.25 for another family summer camping trip. We're at Campground # 28 Campground # 27 is accommodating for disabilities. Which was right across from our campground # 28. #27 had majority all pavement in the campsite. Around the picnic table along they have their own water spout for water use. Also located closest to the restroom/showers, has a pavement road leading up to it for easy access. REMINDER there is no washing dishes sink available on these campgrounds nor can you use the restroom sinks to wash anything. There is a sign that it isn't allowed. So make sure to bring your own water! This time around downfall is the electrical plugs in both of the restrooms, weren't working the 2 nights stay we were there. I asked the associates that were driving around daily regards to the power. They told me it's a hit or miss. Sometimes the power isn't working and there's nothing that can be done to fix it. The downfall. Love the Serrano campground since it’s not far from the actual Big Bear village. Still definitely recommend it. Really clean & everyone is respecting each other especially at night.

Beautiful campground. Spacious and very clean, great toilets and hot showers. There is a gorgeous bike path that leads to the lake, campground was very busy but everyone was quiet and respectful. I gave it 4 stars because we saw mice running around our tent few times and it’s the only thing that might stop me from returning unfortunately:(
