San Juan/Middle Mountain

Overview

Middle Mountain Campground provides a quintessential Colorado mountain experience within the sprawling San Juan National Forest. Positioned near the north end of the stunning Vallecito Reservoir, this facility offers a quiet, rustic retreat for those looking to disconnect from the modern world and immerse themselves in nature. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the park emphasizes a natural landscape filled with mature Ponderosa pines and Gambel oaks, creating a secluded and peaceful atmosphere for every visitor who makes the journey.

Location & Surroundings

Perched at an elevation of approximately 7,700 feet, the campground is located about 22 miles north of Bayfield, Colorado. The surroundings are defined by the dramatic mountain vistas of the San Juan range and the deep blue waters of the nearby reservoir. The environment is one of high-altitude serenity, where the scent of pine fills the air and the night sky offers incredible stargazing opportunities far from city lights. This location provides a true wilderness escape for those who appreciate the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a primitive camping area, meaning visitors should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. There are no utility hookups or dump stations on the grounds, making it best suited for self-contained RV units or those prepared to boondock. Amenities include vault toilets and drinking water available from hand-pumped wells. Each site is furnished with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring. The spacious site layouts often provide more privacy than typical commercial parks, though larger rigs should navigate the access roads with care.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The campground serves as a premier gateway to the Weminuche Wilderness, which is Colorado largest wilderness area. Water enthusiasts can easily access Vallecito Reservoir for world-class fishing, kayaking, and motorized boating adventures. Hikers and backpackers will appreciate the nearby Pine River Trail, which offers miles of scenic trekking through pristine backcountry terrain. Additionally, the historic charm of Durango and the iconic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are within a reasonable driving distance for a full day of western exploration.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is perfectly suited for adventurous boondockers and traditional campers who value scenery and solitude over luxury amenities. It is an ideal spot for those who enjoy waking up to the sounds of nature and spending their days on the water or deep on a mountain trail. Travelers with smaller to mid-sized rigs who are looking for a low-impact camping experience in a stunning alpine setting will find Middle Mountain to be a premier destination for their Colorado road trip.

Nice campground with clean toilets, fire pits. Suited for tent or trailer/rv. Good spots right off of the reservoir for fishing, and plenty of hiking in the area too.

Well maintained by Butch, the kindest groundskeeper. The views are beautiful and each site has one. Avg $27/night with table benches and fire pit at each site.

Great campground - loved the premium spot that overlooked the lake! Water is cold but still enjoyable, nice spot to fish/canoe/kayak. I would recommend being prepared for spotty cell reception.

Spent 2 nights in this National Forest Campground. It offers nice shady (forested) back in spaces, firepit and picnic tables. The location is beautiful, right on Lake Vallectio. Spaces are clean, and easy to access. We stayed in a spot with no electric or water but a water fill station is very close by. I don't think any of the spots offer electric. The bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. The campground host Derek was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay! Thanks

Campground Hosts ,the Wheelers, kept the grounds very clean. The vault toilets were cleaned several times a day and always smelled fresh. We saw several deer 🦌 in the campground the two nights we were there.
