Sandy McNabb
Overview
Sandy McNabb is a scenic destination situated within the Sheep River Provincial Park in the heart of Alberta’s Kananaskis Country. This park offers a tranquil escape from the urban hustle, providing a landscape where the rolling foothills meet the rugged Rocky Mountains. It is a well-loved spot for those who appreciate a more natural camping experience, as it focuses on preserving the wilderness while providing enough structure for a comfortable RV stay. Travelers come here for the fresh mountain air and the opportunity to disconnect in one of Alberta's most stunning protected areas.
Location & Surroundings
Located just west of Turner Valley along Highway 546, the park is defined by its proximity to the Sheep River. The surrounding environment is a mix of lodgepole pine forests and open meadows, providing a diverse habitat for local wildlife. Visitors often catch glimpses of bighorn sheep or deer wandering near the campsites. The river itself creates a soothing backdrop, with its clear, cold waters carving through the limestone valley, offering dramatic views at every bend in the road leading to the campground.
Amenities & Park Features
As a provincial park facility, Sandy McNabb provides a rustic camping environment without individual site hookups. RVers should arrive prepared for dry camping, though the park does provide essential services including vault toilets, a water hand pump, and a communal trailer dump station. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire pit for evening gatherings. The park is uniquely divided into sections, including a dedicated area for equestrian campers featuring hitching rails and specialized stalls, making it a premier choice for those traveling with horses.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of the area is the extensive trail network. The Sandy McNabb Interpretive Trail offers an easy hike with educational markers, while more adventurous travelers can explore the long-distance backcountry paths. Just a short drive further west, visitors can witness the power of the Sheep River Falls, a spectacular natural landmark where the river drops over rocky ledges. Anglers will find plenty of opportunities for fly fishing in the river, while photographers will appreciate the expansive vistas found at the various overlooks along the highway.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer peace and quiet over the amenities of a high-end resort. If you enjoy boondocking or dry camping in a forest setting, you will feel right at home here. It is particularly well-suited for outdoor enthusiasts and families looking to hike, bike, or fish. Because it is less crowded than the major national parks, it is perfect for travelers seeking a deep connection with nature and a authentic taste of the Alberta wilderness.

Beautiful location with spacious sites, well treed, clean, not too close to neighbours. The only downside is you have to rely on park staff to deliver firewood and sometimes you can be waiting for a while before they come along but you do get decent sized bundles when they do show up. Best to stock up when you have the opportunity if you’re planning on having a fire going for a while.

Lovely campground, most of the sites are very good. We had no problem with getting our 35 ' 5th wheel trailer into either of the three sites that we stayed in over 1 week and a few days. Sadly the only reason for the 4/5 star rating is because this campground, like so many others, allows people to book up all the weekends whether they show up or not, making it impossible to stay at pretty much any site longer than 4 or 5 days in a row without having to move to another site, luckily for us the campground staff allowed us to move to the equestrian side of the camp ground for the weekend. This is the only complaint I have. I honestly feel that they shouldn't allow weekend only reservations. And they must lose money because we would have stayed for 2 weeks if we wouldn't have faced having to relocate within the campground for a 4th time. Wonderful, friendly helpful staff. Beautiful surroundings♡

Great campground, close proximity to great trails, waterfalls and activities. Well treed at times we felt like we were alone in the full campground. We had site B-35. Nice dump station. No Cell Service Rogers or Telus.

I really loved this campground and how the sites had seperation and privacy. Even if you could see other peoples campers with some sites, it was positioned in a way where you would just see the back end of the camper and wouldn't have to have daily picnics with eachother ha-ha. It is quite nice to have a location where there is zero phone and internet connection, so you can just disconnect from the virtual world. Makes me really miss the days where you had to be home in order to get a phonecall or sit in front of the internet and you had to be creative to stay entertained. You do have powered sites here, potable water and sewer dumping stations (4 to be exact). Showers are here too and shower tokens cost $3 each and gives you about 6 mins of shower time each coin. Wood was $15 a bag and was in those bags you can get at any gas station... So load up before you go if you find a better price. The parks person would drive by the camp sites about twice a day and you would get your shower tokens and wood from them. The area is beautiful, private and full of wild life. I would definitely come back here again!

Beautiful location with well laid out camp sites in Loop B. The sites have 30/15 amp power only. There are no sewer and potable water within the sites. Potable water is available at certain points within the Loop or at the dump station Toilets are well located throughout the Loop. There are four dump stations that are well setup. The 5 Star rating is for.the campsite and for the Alberta Parks staff who are very friendly and helpful. Now for the negative, it seems certain dog owners have the inability to manage their dogs. This definitely annoyed many of us including those with dogs that are well socialized and mannered.
