Santa Fe/Holy Ghost Campground

Overview

Holy Ghost Campground offers a serene escape within the Santa Fe National Forest, tucked away in a lush canyon near the Pecos Wilderness. At an elevation of approximately 8,200 feet, this campground provides a cool, forested environment that serves as a refreshing retreat from the high-desert heat. It is managed by the Forest Service and emphasizes a primitive, quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the wind through the ponderosa pines and the rushing creek dominate the landscape. This is a place for those who value nature over amenities.

Location & Surroundings

Situated about 14 miles north of Pecos, NM, the campground is accessed via a scenic drive along NM Highway 63. The sites are nestled deep within the Holy Ghost Canyon, where steep limestone walls and dense mixed-conifer forests create a sense of seclusion. The Holy Ghost Creek winds directly through the area, offering beautiful waterside views and a tranquil backdrop for those seeking a true immersion in the northern New Mexico wilderness. The drive itself offers breathtaking views of the Pecos River valley.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility designed for dry camping, meaning there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available. RVers will find approximately 20 sites equipped with basic necessities for a comfortable primitive stay. Key features include:

  • Access to potable water via seasonal hand pumps
  • Individual sites with picnic tables and fire rings
  • Clean and maintained vault toilets

Due to the narrow canyon road and tight site footprints, this location is best suited for smaller RVs, camper vans, or truck campers rather than large motorhomes. There is no dump station on-site, so travelers should arrive prepared.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the Holy Ghost Trail, which leads hikers and backpackers into the heart of the Pecos Wilderness. The creek itself is popular for small-stream trout fishing, attracting anglers looking for a quiet spot to cast a line. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Pecos National Historical Park, which features ancestral pueblo ruins and Civil War battlefields, providing a rich blend of natural beauty and cultural history within the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for adventurous travelers who prefer solitude and scenery over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for small RV owners and van lifers who are fully self-contained and comfortable without hookups. If you are a hiker, photographer, or angler looking for a mountain basecamp that feels worlds away from the city, Holy Ghost provides the quiet and proximity to nature you desire. It is a true hidden gem for those who want to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the wild.

We used to camp here every summer when I was growing up. Great memories of a beautiful place. My mother sowed hollyhock seeds 60 years ago and the flowers are thriving even now! ( only the stalks remain since it is November) Historical church and graveyard near by which was interesting.

I've camped here a few times with other families and really enjoyed each trip. The hiking and fishing are both great, and the scenery is beautiful. Star watching at night is outstanding — some of the clearest skies I’ve seen. Just a heads-up: there’s no cell service, so bring satellite comms if you need to stay in touch or have them for emergencies like we did. Overall, a peaceful and memorable spot for camping.

Very skinny, dirt road that's not too friendly on oversized vehicles. We had a Dodge Ram woth a camper and a trailer in tow, and it was okay, but I believe the reason they call it "Holy Ghost" campground is because you are praying down that entire 3 mile road that there is no oncoming traffic. Then someone needs to back up. But, once you are there, I think it's one of the very best campgrounds in the state. We met a couple from Germany, and they were amazed by it's beauty and abundance of animal and plant life. There are lots of insects, but I was pleasantly surprised that there were no mosquitos, even though we were near water. The creek that runs along the side has little rainbow trout, and there are wild raspberries and gooseberries and wild roses galore. Lots of paths to explore though the woods. Good amount of space per campsite and all sites on the east side have access to the creek. I believe the only negativity in reviews could be from 1)the difficult road 2)it's not an overly developed campground, so the sites are pretty level, but it's not like you have a cement slab to park on.. If you love the outdoors, and quiet, beautiful trees and the sound of running water, it's worth the trek. My Dad and I visited in the last week of August, 2024. The weather and overall experience could not have been more perfect. And the dog loved it too! Picnic table and fire ring at every site.
