Santa Fe/San Antonio Campground

Overview

Nestled deep within the Santa Fe National Forest, the Santa Fe/San Antonio Campground offers a refreshing high-altitude escape for RVers. Located at an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet, this park provides a cool, shaded environment perfect for escaping the summer desert heat. It captures the rugged beauty of New Mexico’s mountains, offering a tranquil forest setting where the wind through the ponderosa pines provides the primary soundtrack for your stay.

Location & Surroundings

This campground is situated off Highway 126, just northwest of the historic village of Jemez Springs. The site sits right along the scenic San Antonio Creek, which winds gracefully through the canyon. The surrounding landscape is characterized by steep volcanic cliffs, lush alpine meadows, and dense evergreen forests. It is a prime location for those who appreciate authentic mountain scenery and a sense of peaceful isolation without being too far from the cultural landmarks of the Jemez Valley.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional forest service style park, the amenities focus on the essentials of outdoor living. The park is designed to facilitate a connection with nature rather than provide modern resort luxuries. Key features include:

  • Paved parking spurs designed to accommodate various RV lengths and sizes.
  • Conveniently located vault toilets and access to potable drinking water.
  • Individual site features including a heavy-duty picnic table and a dedicated fire ring.

While there are no electrical or water hookups at individual sites, the park provides trash collection and a well-maintained environment for those who enjoy self-contained RVing in the wilderness.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the main draw for this area. The world-famous San Antonio Hot Springs are located just a short drive or hike away, offering natural soaking pools with incredible mountain views. Nature enthusiasts often visit the nearby Valles Caldera National Preserve to spot elk or explore vast volcanic landscapes. Additionally, the creek offers excellent seasonal fishing opportunities for those hoping to catch trout right near their campsite.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for RVers who prefer a rustic, nature-first experience over a paved resort atmosphere. It is a fantastic choice for dry campers and those looking to immerse themselves in the wilderness. Families and solo travelers seeking a cooler summer destination with easy access to hiking, hot springs, and river activities will find this park to be a perfect mountain home base.

Central to many of the Jemez attractions. Great camping atmosphere. Make sure to bring a waterproof tent.

Nice campground. We were in the area for a hunt. This place is nice but tight for anything you tow it drive over 30 feet long; not including the tow vehicle. It's really clean well maintained and from my experience it was safe. There are many options for families in the area. It's really close to the access highway, like 50 feet. There are options for power we were to late on our reservation for that opportunity. Not sure if water was available. Restroom was really clean and well stocked. The large group shelter was in the back looked really nice.

I booked the group site. This is a perfect spot for a group. Individual campsites and a pavilion to use. This campground has facilities maintainers. They come every day to clean the bathrooms and empty all the bear safety trash cans. I recommend having a wagon of some sort to haul all your gear to each site since it has a small path to each site. This site is separate from the rest of the campsites and feels private, but note it is close to the road so you will hear traffic noise, but not a big deal for us. This site has their own bathrooms, so you don't really share with the rest of the campground. It's s about an 8-minute drive to the local corner store. Note: cell coverage for most providers does not work here but you can get wifi at the local store a few miles down the road. The camp host never bothered us and never came to say hi. I recommend this location if you're looking for a group site.

This is a beautiful place! So serene and calm. The stream is so close and it's very family friendly. I didn't want to leave.
