Scioto Trail

Overview

Scioto Trail State Park serves as a tranquil gateway to the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio. Located within the vast Scioto Trail State Forest, this park provides a secluded escape for RVers who value natural beauty over commercial glitz. The landscape is defined by rolling ridges and dense hardwoods, offering a serene backdrop for a weekend getaway. It is one of Ohio’s most scenic and historically significant state parks, known for its rugged terrain and peaceful, wooded atmosphere that invites travelers to slow down and reconnect with the outdoors.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Chillicothe, the park is perched on a high ridge that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. Visitors find themselves immersed in a massive 9,030-acre state forest, providing a sense of isolation and deep connection to nature. The geography is shaped by the foothills, featuring steep ravines and winding roads that lead to quiet lakes. Despite its remote feel, it is conveniently located near US Route 23, making it an accessible stop for travelers heading through the southern region of the state.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 55 sites equipped with electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes in a mostly shaded environment. While the setting is rustic, the park provides essential conveniences including a modern shower house and a centrally located dump station for RV maintenance. For recreation within the park, visitors can enjoy easy access to two small lakes, Caldwell and Stewart, which are perfect for quiet paddling and fishing. The park also maintains a playground and several picnic areas, ensuring that families have dedicated spaces to gather and relax.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 12 miles of wooded hiking trails, some of which connect to the extensive Buckeye Trail. Just a short drive away, the city of Chillicothe offers rich historical sites like the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and the Adena Mansion. During the summer, many guests attend the famous Tecumseh! Outdoor Drama at nearby Sugarloaf Mountain. Fishing and small-craft boating remain popular activities on the park's tranquil waters, where only electric motors are permitted to maintain the quiet environment for all visitors.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and hikers who prefer a quiet, wooded environment over a bustling resort atmosphere. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to introduce children to the outdoors through fishing and easy trail walks. Because of its hilly terrain and peaceful nights, it is also highly recommended for solo travelers or couples seeking a scenic retreat. If your travel style favors starlit skies and forest sounds, Scioto Trail is a perfect fit for your southern Ohio RV itinerary.

A lovely little park situated in a valley with a small lake. The hiking trail passes through the park and is well marked. Restroom facilities well clean, heated, and well maintained. The camping areas had a variety of shallow and deep sites, but the access roads are a little narrow for larger RV's and campers.

The park was amazing, everything was clean and the layout was nice. we stayed in the cabins which were comfy and had heat and ac. It was real easy tk get in and out of the park, the playground was big and had a few things for kids to play around on. The lake was beautiful and I even caught a bass.

Beautiful drives and hikes, loved our tent camping, even around the other RVs, electric hookup allowed us to plug in a few electric appliances foe ease amd comfort. Lots of great hiking we wish we had more time for. New bathrooms across from the old cabin and memorial were great. Make sure to climb the firetower all the way up and stop at the scenic overlook for a beautiful sunset! We heard a pair of owls hooting an evening chorus! Make some time to visit nearby Great Seal SP and don't miss historic and beautiful Chilicothe. I never knew it's historic buildings and parks were so well kept, full of food and fun shops!!

Neat state park that looks like it offers a lot especially in the summer. Would love to explore more when not close to sunset. Found 1 small playground and climbed part of the fire tower. Fire tower definitely shakes a little.

Primitive camping nice spaces available. Pit toilet were fine but lacked tp. The trails were a challenge but doable.
