Sequoia/Dorst Creek

Overview

Dorst Creek Campground offers an immersive experience within the high-altitude forests of Sequoia National Park. Located at an elevation of roughly 6,800 feet, this seasonal destination provides a cool retreat during the summer months. It serves as an excellent base for exploring the Giant Forest while maintaining a sense of secluded wilderness that many RV travelers crave. The atmosphere here is peaceful and centered on the natural environment, providing a true mountain getaway. This site is perfect for those who want to be surrounded by ancient sequoias and diverse wildlife.

Location & Surroundings

Situated between the Grant Grove and the Giant Forest, the park sits along the banks of Dorst Creek. The surrounding landscape is dominated by mixed conifer forests, offering ample shade and a genuine mountain atmosphere. Its proximity to the Generals Highway makes it convenient for navigating through the heart of the park while remaining nestled deep within the trees. It feels like a genuine escape into the Sierra Nevada, where the air is crisp and the scenery is constantly changing with the light.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a dry camping facility, meaning there are no hookups available for RVs at the individual sites. However, the park is equipped with essential features including flush toilets and potable water. Each site provides a picnic table, fire ring, and a required bear-proof food locker to keep the local wildlife safe. An on-site dump station is available for RV users, making it much easier to manage longer stays without needing to leave the park boundaries for basic maintenance.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

One of the primary draws is the Muir Grove Trail, which begins right within the campground and leads hikers to a stunning collection of sequoias. Visitors are also just a short drive or shuttle ride away from the famous General Sherman Tree and the Lodgepole Visitor Center. The seasonal shuttle service is a standout feature, allowing guests to explore popular landmarks and scenic vistas without worrying about limited parking at major trailheads during the busy summer season.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate rustic camping over resort-style amenities. It is particularly well-suited for families and groups who want to be close to the park’s main attractions while enjoying a quiet evening in the woods. Those who enjoy hiking and photography will find the nearby trails and ancient groves exceptionally rewarding. It is a top choice for travelers who prioritize nature access and a traditional camping experience over luxury conveniences.

Close to the Giant Forest and Grant Grove. Nestled among large trees, the campsites are all pretty nice. We stayed in the first loop, but there are over 200 sites among other loops. Bathrooms were clean.

Campground is good, has different sites, one of the main feature that it connects with a park by shuttle system. But the problem is that shuttle system in Sequoia is not comfortable to use. So I prefer Stony Creek campground for it's spaciousness and quiet

The campground contains benchtables and fireplace. There is water, which is not drinkable. The toilets are a little nasty and there are no electricity, showers or mobile connection. There are plenty of wildlife, we saw plenty of chipmunks and squirrels and a deer that didn't care at all of presence. All in all a great campground.

I really like Dorst Creek Campground because the campsites weren't too close to each other. I've been to a lot of campsites here in the Sequoias and this campsite had the most deer roaming around in my opinion. The family and I would see deer within 15 to 20 feet from our campsite just about every 2 hours. We were on site 97 and the creek was only about 50 feet away and it was very relaxing sleeping to the sound of the water trickle down the site.

Don't stay in F145...the fire pit is so close to the adjacent campsite (3-4 feet) that we felt like we were encroaching on the other site including the ability to hear every word and sound (snoring, loudly over the crackling sound of the fire). Amenities include flushing toilets and not much else. There is no fire wood to buy, but plenty of firewood to collect. There was a large group next to us that was partying until midnight. Without a camp host or ranger stationed at the site, there was nobody there to enforce quiet hours.
