Sequoia/Fairview
Overview
Fairview Campground offers a premier gateway to the southern Sierra Nevada, nestled within the sprawling Sequoia National Forest. Located along the banks of the Upper Kern River, this site provides a genuine escape for RVers who value natural scenery over modern frills. It is a place where the sound of rushing water replaces highway noise, offering a serene forest atmosphere that feels worlds away from the California coast.
Location & Surroundings
Situated about 16 miles north of the town of Kernville along Mountain 99, the park is surrounded by steep canyon walls and diverse High Sierra flora. This high-elevation landscape sits at approximately 3,500 feet, providing significantly cooler temperatures than the valley floor. The Kern River serves as the park’s backyard, creating a dramatic backdrop of granite boulders and rushing rapids that define the rugged beauty of this region.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service site, meaning amenities are focused on the essentials of dry camping. Visitors will find paved parking spurs suitable for various RV and trailer lengths, though there are no utility hookups available on-site. The park provides potable water spigots and well-maintained vault toilets for guest convenience. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, encouraging traditional outdoor cooking and evening gatherings under the stars.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Many travelers use the park as a base camp to visit the Trail of 100 Giants, where massive ancient sequoias dominate the landscape. The Kern River is world-renowned for its whitewater rafting and fly fishing opportunities. Additionally, the nearby Whiskey Flat Trail offers miles of hiking with stunning river views, while the charming town of Kernville provides local craft breweries and regional history museums.
Who This Park Is Best For
Fairview is best suited for self-contained RV travelers and boondockers who enjoy a primitive camping style in exchange for incredible views. It is an ideal destination for anglers, rafters, and nature photographers looking for direct river access. If you prefer a rugged mountain setting over a commercial luxury resort, this park offers the perfect balance of accessibility and immersion in the wild California wilderness.

Nice camping ground. Just remember there is no cell phone signals up there. Bring some form of protection because running into wild animals is a possibility. It can also get very windy up there so no cheap pop up tents, only bring the camping equipment that's sturdy and reliable.

It was a nice and clean campground, and it was suitable for family outdoors. It's also a good spot for fishing. You also have a restaurant, store, and lodge, plus wifi, options right next to it.

My friend has been coming here for 20 plus years. My 2nd time, joining his friends for what turned out to be a perfect long weekend. The weather wasn't too hot, the river was raging & refreshing, & McNallys was delicious!
