Sequoia/Princess
Overview
Sequoia/Princess, widely recognized as the Princess Campground, offers a quintessential mountain camping experience within the Sequoia National Forest. Nestled in the Indian Basin, this site is unique for its location within a grove of Giant Sequoias that was historically logged, leaving behind massive, weathered stumps that stand alongside a thriving new generation of giants. It provides a peaceful, shaded retreat for travelers who want to experience the High Sierra wilderness in its most natural state.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Miramonte, CA, at an elevation of nearly 5,900 feet, the park is ideally located in the Hume Lake Ranger District. The environment is dominated by a lush canopy of ponderosa pines, firs, and cedars, offering a cool respite from the valley heat. Its strategic position just outside the Big Stump entrance of Kings Canyon National Park makes it a prime gateway for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of the surrounding national parks while staying in a quieter forest setting.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is a traditional forest service facility, emphasizing a rustic atmosphere over modern development. While there are no electrical or water hookups, the park provides essential potable water and vault toilets throughout the grounds. Each individual campsite is thoughtfully integrated into the forest floor and includes a bear-resistant food locker, a sturdy picnic table, and a fire ring. These features cater perfectly to self-contained RVers and campers who appreciate a primitive, dry-camping style.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Adventure is just steps away, with the Indian Basin Interpretive Trail winding directly through the campground, offering an educational and scenic walk suitable for all ages. A short drive takes visitors to the crystal-clear waters of Hume Lake, which is a local favorite for fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating. Additionally, the famous General Grant Tree, known as the Nation's Christmas Tree, is located only a few miles away within the Grant Grove area.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best for outdoor enthusiasts and families who seek a genuine connection with nature rather than the amenities of a commercial resort. It is a fantastic choice for wildlife watchers and those who enjoy the simplicity of a campfire under a dark, starry sky. Because of its lack of hookups, it is ideal for travelers in smaller rigs or those with solar capabilities who want to immerse themselves in the majestic landscape of the California mountains.

We dont normally camp in an established campground. But this one is great. We typically go either early or late season and on weekend. So that being the case it's almost never crowed when we go. The camp hosts and staff keep it well maintained and the vault toilet facilities clean. A beautiful place to camp

The campsite was well managed and very clean. Even though the restroom was a pit toilet, it was surprisingly well-kept and didn’t have any unpleasant odor.

Great site, located in just under 6000 feet elevation in the Sequoia Natuonal Forest, next to a walkable meadow trail. The campground has a dump station for RVs. Quiet campsite with lots of space between campers. Few miles to Hume Lake and fork in the road to Kings Canyon Side where Boyden Caverns are located.

Cross-posting from recreation.gov: Very nice campground: campsites well-spaced, lovely trees and meadow, toilets clean and non-stinky. (however the 2 days the campground host was off [mon-tues] and someone else filled in, the toilets were not as well-taken care of. Downgrading 1 star for that. bring TP. And some campers just never shut the lid, argh.) 55 SHIN was pleasant but small, only level space for 1 tent, and that had to be right next to the picnic table. Other spot doesn’t slant too much so would be workable but is very close to road. Nice shade morning and evening, direct sun midday. (Probably every site in this campground is like that because the trees are all pines without broad branches.) Not quite 2 hours to get to Crystal Cave, about 25-30 minutes less to the Sherman Tree area, 10 minutes to Grant Grove Village. Great star watching spot 3 miles east on 180. Kings Canyon is amazing. We arrived on a Sunday and it was lots of tents and families; larger groups and more RVs moved in on Thursday. Thursday night was still quiet, though. (We left Friday morning.) I would definitely come back, though would look for a site on the outer loop for personal preference. PICNIC TABLE IS SLANTED, BRING SOMETHING TO LEVEL YOUR STOVE.

5 stars for the campground as a whole, but 1 star for the particular campsite that we had. DO NOT GET CAMPSITE #50 IF YOU HAVE AN RV OR TRAVEL TRAILER!!!! The parking spot for the trailer/rv is at a very steep incline, and it drops down off of the pavement which makes it VERY difficult to pull a travel trailer in and out without scraping the bottom of the trailer. The campsite is also NOT FULL SHADE like it states, it's only partial shade and a LOT of sun between 10 AM and about 1 PM. There is a slope that leads down to the picnic table, so it will be a lot of leg work going up and down from your trailer/rv/car to the picnic table and campfire area. On top of that, this particular campsite is facing the wrong direction from the way you're supposed to drive in on the loop road, so it makes it nearly impossible to back a trailer into. I hope people read this honest review and do not book this particular campsite if you have a travel trailer or RV, it's not a good idea. This campsite would be best for people with tents, and nothing more.
