Sequoia/Stony Creek

Overview

Sequoia/Stony Creek offers a quintessential alpine escape within the Sequoia National Forest. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, this park provides a cool, shaded retreat from the valley heat. It is a seasonal destination typically open from late spring through early autumn, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a rugged wilderness setting characterized by towering fir and pine trees. This is a place where the focus remains on the natural landscape rather than modern luxuries.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the town of Wilsonia, California, the campground sits just outside the borders of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Hume Lake Ranger District, offering guests immediate access to dense forests and granite outcrops. Its central position makes it an ideal base camp for exploring the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, providing easy transit between several of the most iconic groves of giant sequoias in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic camping experience designed for those who appreciate simplicity. The park features paved spurs and back-in sites that can accommodate smaller RVs and trailers. While there are no electrical or water hookups, the park provides the following essentials:

  • Functional vault toilets located conveniently near the camping loops.
  • Shared spigots providing potable drinking water for all guests.
  • Individual picnic tables and fire rings with grills for outdoor cooking.

This setup ensures that while the experience is rustic, the basic necessities for a comfortable mountain stay are met.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within a short drive of the park. The famous General Grant Tree, known as the Nation's Christmas Tree, is located nearby in the Grant Grove area. For those seeking water recreation, Hume Lake offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, and non-motorized boating. Hikers can explore numerous trails that lead to scenic overlooks and hidden meadows, providing ample opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography in the heart of the majestic mountains.

Who This Park Is Best For

Sequoia/Stony Creek is best suited for adventurous RVers who enjoy dry camping and wish to disconnect from digital distractions. It is an excellent choice for families and couples seeking a quiet, nature-focused atmosphere away from the more crowded tourist hubs within the national parks. If you prefer the sound of wind through the trees over the hum of a busy resort, this peaceful forested enclave provides the authentic California mountain experience you are looking for.

We had 4 groups across 3 camping spots towards the end of the curve road inside. They were all great spots. As everyone mentions, there are no running water tiolets, but they are very clean. There are water spigots all around to fill up your portable wash stations or to make coffee. There is a nice creek on one side of the campground. Firewood is available for $10 per bundle on the honor system (cash). We used around 10 bundles for the 4 days, mainly bonfire at night. Our group went at the end of July. Nice during the day, but very cold at night. Great view of the stars at night. It's a very short drive to Stony Lodge that has free wifi. They also have ice, snacks, water, alcohol for sale. You can drive to all the scenic spots within 30 minutes.

Ryan our camp host was awesome. Very accommodating to our group. We end up with first come first serve site for July 4th. Site 45 was big enough to accommodate a large group. I was impressed of how clean the vault toilets were.

Amazing campground, very clean and beautiful! We saw some elks and black bear was walking next to our campsite during the day. If you are camping with RV, there is no dumping or water you can fill in your tank. You can drive to Lodgepole (~11 miles away) to do both. The location is great - you can drive to both Sequoia popular spots and Kings Canyon. Best part for us was the natural swimming pools at Upper Stony Creek (just across the road), you can easily walk there

Have camped here multiple times. The absolute best campground in Sequoia if you want to get away from the zoo at Lodgepole. It’s quiet, has a fantastic creek nearby, daily visits by deer, and around the corner is a small grocery store, showers, and the only fuel in the park.

Great campground for a semi-rustic campground. The hosts Ed and Patty were outstandingly helpful. The facilities (pit toilet) might have been the cleanest pit system I have ever seen. Access to the marketplace store less than 1 mile up the road with WiFi and a good selection of camping essentials, and a self serve gas station. Ed went out of his way to be of help when needed. Highly recommended!
