Sequoia/Troy Meadow
Overview
Troy Meadow Campground offers a classic, high-elevation camping experience nestled deep within the Sequoia National Forest. Located in the majestic Southern Sierra Nevada mountain range, this site provides a rugged and authentic escape far from the glow of city lights. Unlike commercial RV resorts, this is a US Forest Service campground that prioritizes the preservation of natural beauty and quietude. It serves as a vital base for those wanting to explore the expansive Kern Plateau and the surrounding wilderness areas while enjoying the crisp mountain air at an elevation of nearly 8,000 feet.
Location & Surroundings
Positioned northwest of Inyokern, CA, at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet, Troy Meadow is beautifully surrounded by lodgepole pines and expansive, grassy mountain meadows. The drive up from the Mojave Desert floor offers dramatic changes in scenery as travelers climb steeply into the timberline. The campground sits adjacent to the South Fork Kern River, providing a lush and tranquil backdrop to the rugged, rocky terrain. Its remote location ensures minimal light pollution, making it a premier destination for travelers who appreciate exceptional night skies and natural serenity.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping destination, Troy Meadow features basic facilities specifically designed for self-sufficient RVers and campers. The park provides the following essentials to maintain a comfortable but rustic stay:
- Vault toilets and seasonal trash collection services.
- Spacious individual sites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings.
- Direct access to forest trails and the scenic riverbank.
Please note that there are no utility hookups, potable water, or dump stations available on-site, so visitors should arrive with full fresh water tanks and sufficient battery power. The sites vary in size but are generally best suited for smaller trailers and agile motorhomes that can navigate winding forest roads.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find a wealth of recreation opportunities just steps from their campsite. The legendary Pacific Crest Trail passes within a few miles of the campground, offering world-class hiking opportunities for both day hikers and through-travelers. For those who enjoy motorized recreation, there are several OHV trails in the nearby Kennedy Meadows area. Anglers can try their luck at trout fishing in the nearby river, while photographers will appreciate the diverse flora and fauna found throughout the sweeping meadows and ancient rocky outcroppings of the high Sierra.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for boondockers and self-contained travelers who prefer peace and solitude over modern luxury. If you enjoy the challenge of dry camping and want to completely disconnect from digital life, this rustic forest setting is the perfect choice. It is best suited for those with smaller rigs or truck campers who can easily navigate mountain terrain and appreciate a traditional outdoor experience. It is a top choice for dedicated hikers and stargazers looking for a quiet, high-altitude retreat in the heart of the Sequoia National Forest.

Don't tell anyone, but this place is awesome. Even made a new bear friend named Henry.

- Kern Plateau Fire Restriction - Hey everybody, TMC IS BACK and open! All sites in all loops & Main Street are ready and waiting for campers! However, a fire restriction is in effect until November 30th for all of the plateau, including TMC. No burning of wood or charcoal. That means no wood campfires or charcoal grills are allowed! Propane or gasoline stoves & lanterns, and propane fire pits & grills are okay, but you must have a valid CA Fire Permit to use them. Let's be safe and close out the summer "Fire Free!" Hope to see you soon! Bob - Troy Meadow Campground Host

I've visited many NF and BLM campgrounds around the western US and this is one of the best ones I've come across. The campground is very clean and well maintained. Each campsite is spacious and has fire rings with a grill that are not all trashed and corroded (like many campgrounds). There are also picnic tables and bear boxes that are in good condition. Even the vault toilets are new and quite clean. Bob Malseed, is the consummate camp host. One of the reviews for TMC is his and he isn't kidding when he encourages people to stop by for a chat. He's engaging and friendly and also takes pride in the quality of the campground and that people have a good time there. Thanks Bob! Our 4x4 club will definitely be back.

Lovely place to camp! Very rural, no cell service but absolutely gorgeous. Perfect place to relax, picnic, ride dirt bikes, bicycling, fishing and connecting with nature. There is a burger place and a general store with lots of friendly people. Price to camp at Troy meadows is $18.50 a night or $8.50 with seniors pass, you need to place fees in a fee drop- this camp ground is a first come first serve, no reservations.
