Sequoia/Upper Peppermint
Overview
Upper Peppermint Campground offers a secluded escape within the Sequoia National Forest. Located at an elevation of approximately 7,100 feet, this destination provides a cooler, high-altitude retreat during the summer months. It is a primitive facility that caters to those who appreciate a rustic camping experience deep in the woods. Unlike paved resorts, this campground emphasizes a quiet connection with nature beneath a canopy of towering lodgepole and red fir trees.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Springville, California, the park is accessed via the scenic Lloyd Meadow Road. The surrounding landscape is defined by the Western Divide Highway corridor, offering sweeping views of granite peaks and dense forests. Visitors will find themselves immersed in a high-sierra environment where the sounds of the wind through the pines and the nearby creek create a peaceful atmosphere. It is the perfect spot for those looking to escape the heat of the Central Valley.
Amenities & Park Features
As a dry camping destination, the facilities here are basic yet functional for self-contained travelers. Each site typically includes a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. There are vault toilets available on-site, but visitors must remember that there is no potable water or electricity. This park follows a pack-it-in, pack-it-out policy, meaning travelers must manage their own waste to protect the pristine Sierran wilderness environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this location is its proximity to world-class hiking and geological wonders. Adventurous travelers can head to the Needles Lookout, which offers breathtaking views of the Kern River drainage. Peppermint Creek is a popular spot for cooling off or light fishing. Additionally, the nearby Freeman Creek Grove provides an opportunity to see majestic Giant Sequoias without the crowds often found in the more commercialized areas of the nearby national park.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers and tent campers who prioritize solitude over luxury. Because the roads and sites can be narrow or uneven, it is best suited for small to medium-sized rigs rather than large motorhomes. If you are a traveler who enjoys boondocking-style camping with the benefit of a designated site, this high-country gem offers the ultimate mountain solitude and access to rugged outdoor recreation.

Along this unpaved dirt road there are plenty of sites to choose from. No facilities but saw one picnic table. Accessible to the creek but not creekside camping. Remote and cool at over 6k elevation.

snowed in right now. they didn't plow the road that you turn into so can't park too close. Could definitely snow shoe in.

Very dirty/trashed due to visitors that have no forest/wilderness etiquette or experience. Most visitors are there to party and not enjoy the peace and quiet. Broken glass is present almost everywhere you walk including along the creek. Trash from fishing supplies litters the bank of the creek. For those of you who have been there, tell me I’m wrong.

A nice campground in the middle of nowhere. There are no facilities but plenty of privacy. It's very isolated so make sure you bring everything you need.
