Shasta Trinity/Tannery Gulch

Overview

Shasta Trinity/Tannery Gulch Campground is located within the sprawling Shasta-Trinity National Forest, offering a classic California mountain experience on the banks of Trinity Lake. Unlike high-density commercial resorts, this park provides a rustic forest setting where the emphasis remains on natural beauty and serene outdoor recreation. As one of the largest and most popular campgrounds on the lake, it provides a well-maintained base for exploring the rugged terrain of Northern California.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Trinity Center, CA, the park is perched on a scenic hillside overlooking the Stuart Fork arm of Trinity Lake. The area is characterized by dense stands of ponderosa pines and Douglas firs, which provide excellent privacy between sites and welcome shade during the warm summer months. The surrounding landscape features the dramatic granite peaks of the Trinity Alps, creating a breathtaking backdrop for campers who appreciate a sense of seclusion and mountain wilderness.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility offers over 100 campsites with paved spurs designed to accommodate various RV lengths. While there are no utility hookups available, the park is well-equipped with essential comforts including potable water, flush toilets, and coin-operated showers. Each individual site features a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings. A significant advantage for boaters is the proximity to a paved boat ramp, allowing for easy access to the water for motorized boats and kayaks alike.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the primary draw here, with world-class fishing for trout and bass available just steps from the campsites. Visitors can enjoy swimming at the designated day-use areas or explore the shoreline by boat. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the nearby Trinity Alps Wilderness offers hundreds of miles of hiking trails. History enthusiasts should not miss the Bowerman Barn, a historic 1800s structure located nearby that showcases the region's agricultural heritage.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who prefer a traditional dry-camping experience over the amenities of a luxury resort. It is a perfect fit for families who enjoy water sports and anglers looking for easy lake access. Travelers seeking a quiet retreat into the California wilderness will find the atmosphere at Tannery Gulch refreshing, as it encourages visitors to unplug and reconnect with the natural environment.

This campground is amazing. I've been going for 20 years straight. The camp host is the kindest woman. You will absolutely enjoy your stay here.

Beautiful and quiet camping area. We went 6/6/25-6/10/25 and the campgrounds were fairly empty. There are no showers at this site but 5 miles down the road at Bushy Tail are coin op showers. Tannery is heavily wooded and walkable to the lake. I suggest sites sites 56-61 if you want to be closest to the lake. There are multiple bathrooms across the campgrounds, some flush and some are dry toilet outhouse style. There was a bear box on our site so we could lock up food every night. We didn't encounter any bears or mountain lions but there was a mountain lion spotting there just two weeks prior so be alert. We had some deer visit us in the middle of the night so be prepared for night visits! All in all this campground was very nice and peaceful, we absolutely would come back here!

The sites and bathrooms are clean, and there are plenty of shade trees, but roadways are narrow.
