Shawme-Crowell
Overview
Shawme-Crowell State Forest offers a serene, wooded retreat at the very entrance of Cape Cod. Spanning over 700 acres, this state-run park provides a quiet, natural atmosphere for those looking to escape the busier commercial corridors of the region. It is characterized by its thick canopy of pitch pines and scrub oaks, creating a secluded environment that feels miles away from the hustle of the mainland while remaining conveniently accessible.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the historic town of Sandwich, MA, the park serves as the perfect gateway to the Cape. Its location near the Sagamore Bridge makes it an easy stop for travelers coming from Boston or Providence. The surrounding area is rich with New England charm, featuring colonial architecture, quaint boutiques, and the famous Sandwich Glass Museum, all located just a short drive from the forest’s peaceful campground entrance.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features 285 campsites nestled deep within the forest terrain. While the sites are primarily designed for primitive RV camping without individual hookups, the park provides essential facilities including a dump station and centrally located restrooms with hot showers. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and fire ring, encouraging traditional outdoor living. The spacious, shaded sites offer a level of privacy and natural beauty often missing from high-density private RV resorts.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
One of the premier perks of staying here is the seasonal access to Scusset Beach State Reservation, where guests can enjoy swimming and sunbathing on the bay. Cyclists and walkers will appreciate the nearby Cape Cod Canal Bikeway, a paved trail offering scenic views of massive passing ships. Additionally, the Heritage Museums & Gardens provides a beautiful backdrop for a day of exploring local flora and impressive collections of Americana and classic cars.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer a rustic, forest setting over a commercial resort experience. Because there are no on-site electric or water hookups, it is best suited for those with self-contained rigs or travelers who enjoy a more traditional camping style. It is a fantastic choice for families and nature enthusiasts who want a quiet, budget-friendly home base while exploring the historic landmarks and coastal wonders of Cape Cod.

The place is well maintained and convenient. It is not easy to find a camp site in Nov in MA. But Area 2 is near the Route 6 so it is a little noisy.

We had a lovely weekend camping at Shawme-Crowell State Forest! The location is super convenient, and the forest itself is beautiful — peaceful, well-maintained, and a perfect Cape Cod getaway. A couple of small suggestions for improvement: The bundled firewood is wrapped in plastic, which feels unnecessary and out of step with the park’s conservation focus — paper wrapping or twine would be much more eco-friendly. The bathroom light bulbs are extremely bright and visible from the Group 3 campsite at night; softer, yellow-toned bulbs would make a big difference for preserving the nighttime forest feel. Overall, though, it’s a wonderful spot that we’ll definitely return to!

I had a blast during my 4 days 3 nights trip to Shawme-Crowell State Forest. As expected from state forest campsites, they don’t disappoint but reservations or bookings are required beforehand, they don’t accept walk-in service. Access to groceries are pretty high so you’ll find yourself close to Starbucks, Dunkin’, Market Basket, and more. Compared to Nickerson State Park this has more access to good amount of stores!

Great campsites amongst tall trees with fire rings and picnic tables. They serve all types of campers, tents, and overland vehicles. They have a store. WOOD. ICE.

Lovely quiet state forest campground with spacious, secluded sites with dry sandy floors. Picnic table and fire ring only. RV spots are limited and back-ins can be tight. No hookups but there are several water spigots by the roads.
