Sierra/Lupine Cedar Bluff

Overview

Located at an elevation of 6,500 feet within the Sierra National Forest, the Lupine and Cedar Bluff loops of Sierra Campground offer a quintessential mountain escape for dedicated explorers. Situated along the scenic eastern shore of Lake Wishon, these specific loops provide a rugged yet accessible experience for those looking to disconnect from the modern world. Managed as part of the PG&E recreation system, this destination is celebrated for its high-altitude beauty and immediate proximity to pristine alpine waters and granite-heavy landscapes.

Location & Surroundings

The park is tucked away in the deep, aromatic woods of the Sierra National Forest, roughly 80 miles northeast of Fresno, California. Surrounded by dense stands of Jeffrey pine and red fir, the campground overlooks the shimmering, cold expanse of Lake Wishon. The surrounding environment is defined by its stunning granite peaks and crisp mountain air, offering a refreshing and stark contrast to the dry heat of the Central Valley floor below.

Amenities & Park Features

These loops are designed for traditional camping, meaning visitors should prepare for a primitive dry camping experience without electric or water hookups at the sites. The park provides the essentials needed for a comfortable stay, including well-maintained vault toilets, seasonal piped drinking water, and paved parking spurs for smaller to mid-sized rigs. Each individual site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring, making it easy to enjoy a classic campfire evening under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is Lake Wishon itself, which serves as a premier destination for trout fishing, kayaking, and low-speed boating. Hikers often use the park as a primary basecamp for exploring the Ansel Adams Wilderness and various trailheads that lead deep into the rugged backcountry of the High Sierras. For a unique day trip, the nearby McKinley Grove offers a rare opportunity to stand among ancient, majestic giant sequoias in a tranquil and secluded forest setting.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who value deep solitude and raw natural beauty over the amenities of a commercial resort. It appeals most to dedicated outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a quiet morning on the water or a challenging day on the mountain trails. If you are looking for a serene mountain retreat where the primary focus is on the surrounding wilderness rather than digital connectivity, these loops provide an ideal high-altitude sanctuary.

We camped her with 6 adults last weekend and had a great time, our campsite had a direct footpath down to the lake (crossing the street prior to hitting the beach). There was enough shade to feel comfortable even in the hot August weather. Toilets were in good state. Bear sightings pretty much each day… so put your food items away people! 😎

The hosts were a very nice couple, taking good care of the campground. Most people in the camping come there for the water sports and beach on the lake, and more people stay up later than in most hiker-dominated campgrounds. Some of the sites are very difficult with tents, it's very rocky. But many tent sites have lake view and it's beautiful

It use to be a great campground but it has turned into too much of a party place. Loud music until the late hours. Very dirty. The lake is amazing which makes the campground tolerable

Mary and her husband are warm and friendly hosts. Camp ground is simple but well maintained and close to the lake. Visited in April when it was quiet. No showers on site, but the nearby Miller's Landing Resort has showers available to the public for a small fee.

My stay at Lupine Campground was a truly immersive experience in nature. Nestled among tall pines with direct access to the shores of Bass Lake, the campground offered a peaceful setting that felt both secluded and connected to the beauty around it. The campsites were spacious, with enough privacy and shade to feel comfortable, and the proximity to the water made it easy to enjoy early morning swims or quiet evening strolls by the lake. Even though it was a popular spot, the campground maintained a serene atmosphere, making it a perfect place for unwinding and disconnecting from daily life.
