Siuslaw/Alder Dune Campground

Overview

Located along the central Oregon coast, Siuslaw/Alder Dune Campground offers a tranquil escape within the lush canopy of the Siuslaw National Forest. This campground provides a classic Pacific Northwest experience, characterized by towering spruce and hemlock trees. Unlike the more crowded coastal hubs, Alder Dune emphasizes a quiet, nature-first atmosphere where the sound of the wind through the trees replaces the noise of traffic. It serves as an ideal base for those looking to explore the unique geological transition from dense forest to massive sand dunes.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is perfectly situated just north of Florence, OR, tucked between the Pacific Ocean and Highway 101. The landscape here is a striking mix of coastal shrubland and freshwater lakes, with both Alder Lake and Dune Lake within easy walking distance. Travelers will appreciate the immediate access to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, which offers a starkly beautiful contrast to the verdant campground sites. The surrounding area is rich with coastal fog and the crisp scent of salt air, making it a refreshing stop for any traveler.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic forest service site, Alder Dune prioritizes simplicity over luxury. The campground features spacious, paved pads that can accommodate moderate-sized RVs and trailers, though there are no utility hookups available. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty picnic table and a fire ring for evening campfires. While you won't find a pool or Wi-Fi, the park provides essential potable water and vault toilets to ensure a comfortable stay. The privacy between sites is a standout feature, provided by thick natural vegetation that creates a sense of individual seclusion.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The highlight of staying here is the direct access to the Alder Dune Trail, which winds through the forest and across the rolling sand dunes. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy the proximity to Dune Lake, known for its peaceful waters and seasonal stocking. A short drive south leads to the historic Old Town Florence, while a quick trip north brings you to the iconic Heceta Head Lighthouse, one of the most photographed beacons on the coast. Whether you are searching for tide pools or exploring the vast dunes on foot, the location is central to the best of Lane County.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is best suited for self-contained RVers who value peace and privacy over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts and hikers who want to be steps away from trailheads and coastal lakes. If you enjoy dry camping in a scenic, forested setting where you can truly disconnect, Alder Dune is a perfect fit. It is particularly ideal for those seeking a low-key home base while exploring the natural wonders of the Oregon coast without the bustle of larger commercial parks.

Host currently is a total bossy jerk with attitude issues. This place used to be affordable several years ago. Price was single digit price now 17 plus for america beautiful pass. I question price as not much updating done.

$31 dollars to put up a tent for a night with just the basics. Picknick table and fire ring. water in certain places. At least the pit toilets were some of the cleanest we encountered on our 10 day camping trip. Also it is far away from the beach and the dunes around the campground are not high enough that you could see the beach or a sunset. You can still get some pretty pictures just not of the beach or water.

Good for RV camping. In a tent, you will hear the highway all night long over the very faint sound of the waves. Any sites near the restroom will have to endure an odor, despite it being very well maintained. Some sites have no level area without exposed roots (forget about a tent there). There is Forest and Dune hiking very close. Basically in Florence if you want to be close to town.

Pros: - Cute private camp sites (on the reservation side at least) — we had total privacy up in our spot. - Nice camp host who religiously cleans bathrooms. Cons: - No matter how clean they looked, the smell of the vault toilets was bad, and so strong that we could easily smell it from our site. - Didn't realize how close the sites on our side of the campground are to the highway and were really disappointed with just how loud it was all day and all night. All together, the cons were enough that we tried to spend as little time at our camp as possible. Pick a site as far from the toilets and highway as possible, and bring earplugs to get any sleep.

Pros: convenient location, the lake is pretty, lots of wild Berries, cute little trails around the lake, very clean bathrooms for a campsite. Cons: you can hear cars on the highway at night, the lake is quite small and we found 3 random fish hooks near the shore, the spots were tiny (we literally had to set one of the tents up on the cement) and close to one another (we heard lots of other campers, including some folks who brought out a home theater with amplified sound). It was sufficient for our needs, but nothing spectacular. Seems like it is well-suited for RV camping, though.
