Skidaway Island

Overview

Skidaway Island State Park offers a quintessential Georgia coast experience, nestled among towering live oaks and Spanish moss. Located just outside the bustle of Savannah, this state park serves as a serene sanctuary for travelers seeking a natural escape without sacrificing convenience. The park is renowned for its preservation of the maritime forest and salt marshes, providing a lush, green backdrop for your stay. It is an ideal destination for those who appreciate quiet evenings and the distinct beauty of the Lowcountry landscape.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated on a barrier island bordered by the Intracoastal Waterway and vast salt marshes. While the environment feels worlds away from the city, it is only a short drive from the Savannah historic district. The surrounding area is defined by tidal creeks and diverse wildlife, making it a prime spot for spotting white-tailed deer and various coastal birds. The air here is often filled with the refreshing scent of the salt marsh, creating a deeply immersive coastal atmosphere for campers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features spacious sites that cater to both back-in and pull-through needs. Many sites offer full hookups, including water, power, and sewer, which is a notable benefit for a state park facility. Key park features include:

  • Clean bathhouses and laundry facilities.
  • Multiple picnic shelters and playgrounds.
  • Over six miles of scenic hiking trails.
  • An interpretive center with local nature exhibits.
  • Bicycle rentals for exploring the flat island terrain.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Staying here allows for easy day trips into historic Savannah, where you can explore the famous city squares, cobblestone streets, and waterfront shops. For those craving the beach, Tybee Island is a manageable drive away, offering sandy shores and a historic lighthouse. Nature enthusiasts will enjoy the Sandpiper Trail, a boardwalk path through the salt flats that is perfect for birdwatching. Additionally, the nearby UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium provides a closer look at local marine life.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is perfect for nature-focused RVers who want a quiet, scenic home base while exploring Georgia's colonial history. It is particularly well-suited for birders and photographers who will appreciate the varied wildlife and soft coastal light filtering through the trees. Families find the wide trails and interpretive programs engaging, while big-rig owners will find the layout easier to navigate than many other rustic state parks. It is a peaceful alternative to commercial RV resorts.

What a beautiful, well maintained state park. The staff was friendly and helpful! The camping area and the restrooms were kept clean! Great place to stay!

Quiet camp ground, easy to get to, nice sites, clean and ample facilities, hiking trails, downtown Savannah only a short drive. Only complaints would be; the loop road is in bad state due to tree roots, is quite narrow, and overhung in places by some quite sturdy trees. A tall motorhome or 5th wheel would need to be extremely careful - if you are over 12ft then be cautious.

Lots of amenities at this state park. Very accessible. Electricity and water at every site. Beautiful, shady, spacious sites. Plenty of showers with abundant, warm water. Less than 30 minutes from Historic Savannah. Groceries and restaurants close at hand. There's even a coffee truck, Overflow Coffee, in the parking lot of the church right outside the park entrance, opening at 7 am.

Our Scout Troop stayed in the pioneer (primitive) campsite, which was perfect for our group. The rangers and park staff were very helpful with our needs, and very happy to engage in conversation. They were all knowledgeable about the park and surrounding areas, and taught us about the natural features (and some invasive species) in the Low Country.

The premium sites were the most level. They were considered premium because they had 50 amp service and sewer hookups. Our first night we were scheduled to be in site 77 which was so unlevel we absolutely could not set up with our 30 foot travel trailer. We moved to site one and stayed five more nights. They have nice laundry rooms and showers throughout the park. The Ranger station/store/education center is very new and nice.
