Skyline Wilderness Park
Overview
Skyline Wilderness Park offers a unique alternative to the high-end luxury resorts typically found in California’s wine country. Managed by a dedicated non-profit organization, this 850-acre wilderness area provides a rugged, natural escape right on the edge of the city of Napa. It serves as a vital recreational hub for locals and travelers alike, offering a peaceful setting where the sounds of nature replace the bustle of the highway. It is a place where conservation and recreation meet perfectly.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at the southern foot of the Suscol Ridge, the park occupies a prime location just minutes from downtown Napa. The landscape is characterized by rolling golden hills, oak woodlands, and native grasslands. From the higher elevations of the park, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Napa Valley and, on clear days, even glimpses of the San Francisco Bay Area in the distance. The proximity to local transit makes it easily accessible while remaining secluded.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground is designed for those who appreciate a more traditional outdoor experience. While the setting is rustic, the park provides essential comforts for travelers. Key features include:
- RV sites with water and electric hookups for various rig sizes.
- A centrally located dump station for convenient waste management.
- Access to an extensive 25-mile trail network for hiking and biking.
Additionally, the park is home to a professional-grade disc golf course and the serene Martha Walker Native Plant Garden, which showcases the region's diverse flora.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the world-class tasting rooms of the Napa Valley wine region are just a short drive away. Visitors can explore a variety of local attractions including:
- The Oxbow Public Market for local artisanal goods and dining.
- The historic Napa Valley Wine Train for a scenic vineyard journey.
- Boutique shopping and fine art galleries in downtown Napa.
The park serves as an excellent base camp for those wanting to explore the iconic Silverado Trail and the surrounding world-renowned estate wineries.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for active outdoor enthusiasts, particularly mountain bikers and hikers who want immediate trail access from their campsite. It is also a fantastic choice for budget-conscious RVers looking for a functional home base near Napa’s premium attractions without the resort price tag. If you prefer a rustic, quiet environment over a paved parking lot with swimming pools, the natural charm and wildlife of this wilderness park will appeal to your travel style.

We wanted a shorter hike. So we took buckeye and lower skyline loop trail. The trail was not great in terms of scenic views. But gives some good high spots to view down the valley. It was a week day. So the traffic on trail was quite less which was good! It’s not shadowy, so you may want to choose your timing right. The numeral only signboards were not that super helpful in navigating the trail. Overall ok trail for an unplanned, short hike …

wide open space with courtesy and helpful staff on site. Animal friendly but lots of burs so the doggies have to be thoroughly checked since the paws collect them very quickly. Even the dog run was not immune from the burs .

Nice park. Nice disc golf course one could play. Trail marking could be a little better as not all shown are accessible. Also, trails are a bit rocky. If you're an experienced mountain biker that likes hills, then they were fine. Ebikes would have a bit of a problem. The Lake Marie at the end of one of the trails was nice; about 1.5 miles upwards and took at least 45 min each way. Outhouse about half way was available. 2 showers and 2 restrooms are available... they need upgrading. Lady at front kiosk was very friendly. If you're biking to town, the road has no bike party and the traffic is a little fast. Large native garden area.

Excellent park, complete with RV Hook Ups, California Native Gardens, clean restrooms and showers and over 25 miles of hiking trails. Entry fee $6.00. Hiked the Skyline Park Perimeter Loop Trail @ 10 miles. Well marked & maintained trail. Very enjoyable hike, saw a rafter of 20 turkeys, several deer, very large squirrels, California Newt, Red Tail Hawks, Kestrel, Red Head Acorn Woodpeckers. & California Quail.
