South Arm Campground
Overview
South Arm Campground provides a quintessential Maine wilderness experience on the southern tip of Lower Richardson Lake. Family-owned for generations, this destination offers a peaceful escape from the hustle of modern life. Visitors come here to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the western mountains, where the focus is on lakeside relaxation and traditional outdoor recreation. It serves as a scenic gateway to one of the most pristine and remote water bodies in the state.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away in Andover, Maine, the campground is surrounded by vast timberlands and the rugged terrain of the Rangeley Lakes region. The park sits directly on the water, offering a dramatic landscape of deep blue lake views and dense evergreen forests. Because it is located at the end of a long access road, the remote atmosphere ensures a quiet stay where the sounds of loons often replace the noise of traffic or city life.
Amenities & Park Features
The facility caters to various camping styles, providing RV sites with water and electric hookups as well as more primitive tent areas for a rugged experience. Key features include a full-service boat launch and dockage, making it easy for travelers to get on the water. The camp store is a central hub, stocked with essential supplies like ice, wood, and propane. They also offer boat and motor rentals for those who want to explore the lake's hidden coves and islands.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is a primary draw here, with the lake being famous for its landlocked salmon and brook trout. Beyond the water, hikers can access sections of the Appalachian Trail, which passes through the nearby mountains. Nature photographers will find endless subjects, from local wildlife like moose to the stunning sunsets over the water. The surrounding area is part of a massive conservation effort, ensuring the mountain views remain unspoiled and wild for miles in every direction.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers who value a rustic, off-the-grid vibe over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for boating enthusiasts and anglers who want immediate access to deep-water fishing. Families looking to disconnect from technology will appreciate the lack of digital distractions. If you enjoy a back-to-basics approach to RVing where the primary entertainment is provided by the great outdoors, this is your ideal Maine destination.

Stayed at a primitive site but left early due to a couple reasons. Firstly, before booking the site I explained to staff I had a 12×12 canvas tent and was concerned if there was decent area to stake it. Turned out not to be the case, best spot had a substantial slope(hard to tell from photo). Kept sliding down on sleeping pad. Secondly, the outhouse looked to be older than me (I'm 50). Feces was within a foot of toilet seat. Went to a second site to use bathroom while fishing. This outhouse had no toilet seat and was completely backed up. Staff were very friendly but if you're looking to stay at a primitive site, you might want to reconsider.

This place was fun. They do shut off the power during the night so keep that in mind on hot summer days. It’s very gorgeous, they have an amazing view.

It’s wayyy out there so a great spot to get away from town. However, the two nights we stayed there was a camper next to us, no one was there all weekend- an alarm on the camper went off from 4:30am - 7am the first night and 2:30-6am. When I told the office about it they checked on the wrong camper, when at check out we told them we came to relax and get away from alarms to have a relaxing weekend they couldn’t do anything to reimburse us for the inconvenience when other campers next to us also heard it. They could have refunded one night and choose not to do anything but shrug.. they knew who owned the camper.. we were also told we had a site on the water, we did not. We usually go to Coos Canyon but they were full up & wanted to try somewhere new. Lesson learned. It was really pretty at South Arm but not worth having that issue again with no attempt to make the situation better. If they reach out I’d be willing to change my rating. But beware camping next to “lifer” campers or Rv’s that are empty.

Good campground with water sites, bathrooms with showers, rent boat or canoe, or bring your own as they have a boat launch and docks where you can rent a slip. Store sells ice and a few other things. Lake water is cooler than most other lakes, refreshing as we say.

Southarm campground in Andover Maine is a great camping experience. Remote sites are clean. Sites are far enough apart for complete privacy. Boat slips at main campground are easy to dock, plenty of firewood for sale. Bathrooms are spotless. Showers are the same. Already making plans for 2026 summer camping trip .
