South Fork SRA
Overview
South Fork State Recreation Area offers a serene escape just a short drive from the bustling city of Elko. This state park is centered around the South Fork Reservoir, a body of water renowned for its high-quality fishing and calm atmosphere. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Ruby Mountains, the park provides a scenic and quiet alternative to standard highway-side RV parks. It is a place where the landscape defines the experience, offering travelers a chance to reconnect with the high desert environment of northeastern Nevada.
Location & Surroundings
Located approximately 16 miles south of Elko, the park is nestled within the rolling hills and sagebrush plains of the Humboldt River basin. The surrounding landscape is characterized by its wide-open vistas and the jagged peaks of the nearby Ruby Mountains, often referred to as the Swiss Alps of Nevada. This location serves as a perfect base for those who want to experience the high desert wilderness while remaining close enough to Elko for essential supplies and local dining options.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at South Fork SRA, specifically the Churchill Canyon Campground, is designed for those who appreciate a more traditional camping experience. The park offers 25 campsites featuring paved pads that can accommodate most RV sizes. While there are no electrical or water hookups at the individual sites, a sanitary dump station and potable water are available for guest use. Visitors will find vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, making it an ideal spot for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy dry camping in a well-maintained environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of the park is the water. Anglers frequent the reservoir to catch trophy-sized trout and smallmouth bass, while boaters enjoy the expansive surface area for water skiing and jet skiing. There are several boat ramps available for easy access. Beyond the water, the area is excellent for wildlife viewing, with frequent sightings of mule deer and various waterfowl. For a day trip, many visitors head to the nearby Lamoille Canyon to explore its glacier-carved valleys and hiking trails.
Who This Park Is Best For
South Fork SRA is best suited for self-contained RVers who prefer peace and quiet over the amenities of a luxury resort. It is a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families who enjoy water-based activities like fishing or kayaking. If your travel style involves watching the sunset over a still lake and waking up to the sounds of nature rather than traffic, this park is a perfect fit. It serves as a beautiful, rustic stopover for those traveling through Nevada on Interstate 80.

Its a beautiful park. If you want quiet, go during the week. Keep pets away from the water, it will make them very sick, kids as well.

Stayed on the West side. Very nice campground pretty quiet, had electric at every spot. They have water spigot around and a dump station at entrance. Shower and bathrooms house was clean. Lots of hiking trails around. Water was a little algae-y but some people took boats out. Pull throughs are a little awkward for big rigs, they're like 90 degrees angles in the middle so we ended up just backing in, but plenty of room.

My favorite state park, and I have been to all 27 state parks. It has everything for recreation and fun.

We took three of our Grandchildren camping for 3 days and we went to the lake and did a bit of fishing. Went to Jet Ski Beach and swam. The water was awesome. As far as the campground, it's clean, nice and well kept. We really enjoyed it!

East campground has flush toilets and showers. Nice spots. The thing I hate about this place is finding a location to launch a kayak or day use beach area. So much of it is fenced off. And when you do find a spot expect to share it with people 5 feet from you.
