St George Island
Overview
Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park offers a serene escape on one of Florida’s most beautiful barrier islands. This park is defined by its miles of undeveloped beaches and crystalline Gulf waters. Visitors find a peaceful landscape where the rhythm of the tides replaces the hustle of daily life. It is a premier destination for those who appreciate a quiet, natural setting focused on outdoor exploration and coastal beauty. It provides an authentic Florida experience where the sounds of the ocean are the primary soundtrack for your stay.
Location & Surroundings
Situated at the eastern end of the island, the park is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Apalachicola Bay. The environment features rolling sand dunes, coastal scrub, and salt marshes. Reaching the park involves a scenic drive across a four-mile bridge, offering panoramic views of the emerald water. This isolated location provides a profound sense of seclusion while remaining a short drive from local shops. It is part of the legendary Forgotten Coast, known for its preserved natural state and lack of high-rise development.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides 60 sites equipped with water and electricity, accommodating a variety of RV sizes. The park features clean bathhouses with hot showers and essential laundry facilities. Key features include:
- A centrally located dump station for RV waste.
- Accessible boardwalks leading directly to the beach.
- A concrete boat ramp for bay access.
The sites are well-spaced to offer privacy between neighbors within a pine forest canopy that provides welcome shade from the Florida sun.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Exploring the historic St. George Lighthouse is a highlight for many visitors, offering breathtaking views from the top of the tower. Anglers can enjoy productive fishing in the surf or the bay, while birdwatchers will find a haven for migratory species along the shorelines. Hikers can enjoy several miles of trails through the pine forests and marshes. These paths are excellent for spotting local wildlife such as bald eagles and ospreys. A short drive to the mainland leads to Apalachicola, a historic town famous for its fresh oysters and maritime heritage.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is perfect for RVers seeking a rustic, nature-focused experience rather than a high-end commercial resort. It is a top-tier choice for stargazers, as the minimal light pollution provides some of the darkest night skies in the state. Families and solo travelers who enjoy wildlife viewing and shelling will find endless enjoyment in the park’s diverse ecosystems and peaceful, uncrowded stretches of sand. It appeals most to those who want to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the pristine coastal environment.

My wife and I set a goal this year to visit a state park every month and go camping. St. George Island State Park has been our favorite so far. Each park has its own charm, but this one truly stands out. There is real privacy, the beach is close, the trails are great for running or biking, and the views are incredible. You feel a genuine connection with nature here. We stayed three days and are already planning to return every year, and next time we’ll stay longer. If you’re looking to relax and disconnect, this is the perfect place.

What a stunning park, beaches were so beautiful the sand so white! The concert around the restrooms had sea animals stamped into it. How cute! Not busy at all, the Nature trails were amazing, so many verify plants and animals. It felt like we were the first ppl to visit! So peaceful, and the campground was laid out to give each site privacy. Very clean and well maintained.

Me and the family spent 2 relaxing nights at SGI state park campground. The campsights are super nice with some shade from trees and foliage that provides some privacy from neighbors. The beaches were pristine with very few people and lots of wildlife. We caught some fish and eating size crabs and saw stingrays and dolphins. This place is a best kept secret on Florida's Forgotten Coast.

One of the best state parks we have experienced. Unusual for any campground, the campsites were mostly separated by trees and shrubs, giving a feeling of privacy even though the sites were as close as most. Each site also has posts with rings for hammocks, something we had never seen before. Each site was raked between guests, and the fire pit was spotless. There is a nature (and fitness) trail that leaves from the campground and continues for over 2 miles. The only disappointment was that pets are not allowed on the beach in the park, but that policy is clearly stated. We just missed it. Otherwise, it is a perfect place to stay for a nice vacation.
