St Vrain

Overview

St. Vrain State Park, formerly known as Barbour Ponds, offers a peaceful retreat for RV travelers looking to escape the hustle of the highway without venturing too far from modern conveniences. Located in Firestone, Colorado, this state park is a unique water-filled oasis set against the backdrop of the high plains. Spanning over 600 acres, the park is defined by its collection of ponds and lush wetlands, providing a scenic environment that feels worlds away from the busy I-25 corridor. Whether you are passing through on a cross-country journey or looking for a weekend basecamp, this park provides a high-quality camping experience with well-maintained facilities.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off Interstate 25, St. Vrain State Park is exceptionally easy to access for rigs of all sizes. Despite its proximity to the interstate, the park's layout helps buffer traffic noise, focusing instead on the expansive mountain views to the west. The surrounding landscape is characterized by wide-open spaces and the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountain Front Range. Its central location makes it an ideal waypoint for those traveling between Denver and Fort Collins, offering a natural setting that serves as a gateway to the northern Colorado plains.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features several camping loops designed specifically with RVers in mind. Many sites are equipped with level concrete pads and offer full hookups, including water, sewer, and 50-amp electricity. For those who prefer a more traditional experience, electric-only sites are also available. Every campsite includes a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings. Additional amenities include:

  • Clean seasonal restrooms and coin-operated showers.
  • A conveniently located RV dump station for guest use.
  • Well-maintained boat ramps for non-motorized vessels.
  • Spacious sites capable of accommodating big rigs.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, particularly for those who enjoy fishing in stocked ponds. The park is home to several species, including bass, bluegill, and trout. Bird watching is another popular pastime, as the park serves as a vital habitat for migratory birds and bald eagles. For those looking to explore beyond the park boundaries, the nearby cities of Longmont and Boulder offer diverse dining, craft breweries, and shopping opportunities. Hikers can also find miles of easy-walking trails that meander around the various ponds within the park limits.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for wildlife enthusiasts and anglers who want to spend their days by the water. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who value ease of access, as the paved roads and level sites make setup effortless for large motorhomes and trailers. If you are a traveler who enjoys a mix of natural beauty and proximity to urban centers, St. Vrain provides the perfect balance. It is a favorite for families and retirees alike who appreciate a clean, quiet environment with stunning sunset views over the water.

St. Vrain State Park is a wonderful location to spend time. I enjoyed camping here by one of the many lakes. The restroom on-site was convenient and clean, with showers. I didn't have to step very far away to take pictures of Osprey dive-bombing into the pond, or herons trying to blend in with the water.

St. Vrain State Park is such a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy Colorado’s great outdoors! The views are gorgeous, the ponds are peaceful, and it’s the perfect place for fishing, walking, or just unwinding with family. The campgrounds are clean and well-kept, and the wildlife sightings make it even more special. As a local real estate agent in Northern Colorado, I love exploring parks like this and sharing them with clients who want to experience the best of our area. Whether you’re camping for the weekend or stopping by for a quick picnic, St. Vrain State Park is the perfect local getaway! 🌳🎣☀️

It’s a beautiful park, offering campers lake views with the Rockies in the distance. The electrified sites are large and well spaced out. There are good walking trails. Water pressure at the dump station is good. If only the park were not next to I-25! You don’t even hear it so much outside, but inside the rumbling gets on your nerves, maybe because you don’t expect the noise. The upside: It’s a prime location for doing business in Denver’s northern suburbs and a nearby gas station sports some of the cheapest prices we have seen ($2.53 late Sept 2025)

Great place, kinda close to the interstate so you can hear the traffic going by. Several ponds to fish in. One loop has a full hookup, so that's nice for longer stays. Easy on and off from I-25. Grocery stores and food choices are close by. A day pass is required to enter and fish. Restrooms have showers.

The campsites surround several ponds, as in many are right on the water. It’s fairly sheltered, so paddling, fishing and swimming are all fun here. I’d advise water shoes due to rocks and mud and the potential for a lost fish hook. The water is pretty green, but it’s been very hot and there’s been no rain for a while, so perhaps that’s why. We’ve seen rabbits, tons of dragonflies, butterflies, fish and many birds: osprey, turkey vultures, pelicans, Canada geese, cormorants and great blue heron. The campsite had a nice, level concrete slab, sheltered picnic table and fire ring. We’ll definitely be coming back!
