Steinaker

Overview

Steinaker State Park offers a refreshing oasis in the rugged high desert landscape of northeastern Utah. Centered around a vibrant reservoir, this park is a favorite for travelers seeking a mix of water recreation and fossil discovery. Whether you are passing through on a road trip or settling in for a few days of relaxation, the park provides a scenic backdrop of blue waters against striking sandstone formations. It serves as a primary hub for those exploring the rich geological and prehistoric history of the Vernal area.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just north of Vernal, the park is nestled within the Uinta Basin, surrounded by colorful rock layers that hint at the region's ancient past. The landscape is characterized by sagebrush-covered hills and dramatic ridges that turn golden during sunset. Its proximity to the Ashley National Forest provides a unique transition between desert valley floors and high mountain peaks. The clear, open skies here offer excellent stargazing opportunities, far from the light pollution of major metropolitan centers.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Steinaker is well-equipped for modern RVers, offering several sites with power and water hookups to ensure a comfortable stay. Key park features include:

  • Expansive boat ramp for easy reservoir access.
  • Sandy swimming beach and designated picnic areas.
  • Clean restrooms, modern showers, and a dump station.

Many campsites provide shade structures and fire rings, making it easy to enjoy the outdoors even during the warmer summer months when the Utah sun is at its strongest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The most prominent draw nearby is Dinosaur National Monument, where visitors can see world-famous fossil beds and ancient petroglyphs. For those who enjoy being on the water, the reservoir is excellent for catching largemouth bass and rainbow trout. Hiking trails wind through the surrounding hills, offering panoramic views of the water and the distant mountains. Additionally, the nearby town of Vernal features local museums and dining, making it easy to resupply or explore local culture.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for families and outdoor enthusiasts who want a home base that combines water access with land-based exploration. It is particularly well-suited for RVers who enjoy boating or fishing but also want to be close to significant historical sites. If you are looking for a serene lakeside retreat that offers a bit more infrastructure than primitive desert camping, Steinaker provides a balanced experience. It is a fantastic choice for those traversing the Flaming Gorge-Uintas National Scenic Byway.

I really enjoyed my car camping stay at this park. The facilities were clean and well maintained. The staff was pleasant and I appreciated being invited to an evening scorpion walk. An overall very good vibe here.

Overall the park was pretty so-so. It borders the reservoir which is pretty, but nothing to write home about. The shore is super mucky and not very suitable for swimming or anything else. The campground seems fairly neglected with very little time spent on care or upkeep. The garbages were emptied and the bathrooms were fairly clean. I wouldn’t spend more than a night here again. The price for the stay for only electric is a little steep for a state park IMO. Our spot 22 was the best though because of all the shade from the trees. It was peaceful and fun to watch all the birds in our campsite in the mornings.

This is a wonderful park in northeastern Utah with lake and sandy beaches to sunbathe, and enjoy swimming for entry fee of just $5 for seniors! It’s near Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and Vernal’s dinosaur marvels. Plan a flight to Salt Lake City then drive around 2 hours east to Vernal through beautiful mountain country!

Definitely worth it if you have your state pass. A wholesome spot for you and your family to swim, but also a great fishing spot for anyone! The fish there are bass, trout, bluegill, and much more! The beaches can be muddy and have burrs, but they’re normally comfortable and nice to stay at! I’ve personally caught tons of bass and I normally don’t have any problems catching fish. Definitely 5 stars!

Stayed here on a trip to Dinosaur National Monument in early April. A mix of hookup and dry camp spots. Water was shut off for the winter but they had winter rates to offset that. There were vault toilets at the campground. The ranger was not there so we needed cash to pay because camping was not an option on the kiosk or online, only drop off envelopes. That was the only issue we had. There was signal at the campground, but slow 4G. They did have very reasonable rates to pay for Wi-Fi use. A travel router would be great for that. We loved the staying on the shore of the reservoir and it was gorgeous in the snow.
