Sturgeon Valley Campground

The place has potential considering all the trails and the close proximity to the Sturgeon River. However, every time there is a heavy rain, the RV part of the campground floods. We changed campsites and got flooded out again. As a result, our vehicles got stuck in the mud. We were constantly worried about destroying the grass with our vehicles or blocking the road if we parked out front. I literally had to wear my knee high rain boots when I stepped out of my camper. We also were there during the ice storm and that was a mess. We were there for only a couple of months when the ownership changed. We found ourselves in a strange situation whereby the new owners were hyper critical of the previous owner’s management. The new owners wanted most of the seasonal campers to leave and They were very disruptive to the whole vibe of the campground. They played music with loud base until 4am drinking and partying most nights. I saw the police talking to the new owner about his behavior. Shortly after the ownership changed, we decided to leave.

In the beginning was a very good experience and sale. The new owners came about. He seemed nice at first and didn't slip the switch partied. All night. Gotta get it? I'm worried constantly when it rains. Because the floods grow bad, 3 inches deep. You get stuck with your vehicles. That's your campsite. It makes you late for work, not good new. Owners have really bad attitudes. They seem a little bit discriminatory. It's also not very kid friendly, it's not a romantic place. It's not quiet and the view is okay. Slight noise from the highway, but not bad.

We spent 6 nights there in July of 2025. 1st the good. The location is great, close to many off road trails, a couple good restaurants nearby, the 30a electric and water seem good, the highway is nearby but not overly loud. Now the bad, the park is in transition the old owner has let it get rundown the bathrooms are a mess all water faucets at the dump station are broken and laying on the ground. The new owner seems nice at 1st but on Friday night him and some friends were partying and shouting along with loud music till close to midnight, Saturday night was more of the same but it went on till 4:00 am.,this along with the uncontrold dog barking makes for a miserable stay. When the owner shows no consideration for his paying guests it's a recipe for disaster. Avoid this campground at all costs, there are other ones nearby, believe the bad reviews about this campground

Stay far away from here! The place is disgusting. Both bathrooms looked like some rodent had been in them shredding toilet paper all over. There was black mold in the showers. The site we reserved had been given to someone else. The next site we were given was also occupied. We asked for a refund and got it. There is a city owned campground in Wolverine. Go there instead. The person who runs it says he gets disappointed campers from Sturgeon Valley daily.

I'm sorry to say that this place has gone downhill since we were here last. The bathrooms have not been updated in decades and they were messy. The site we were at had no picnic table. We later found it broken and lying in the weeds in between the sites. There were many other picnic tables, benches and equipment which were broken. The water pump at the dump station was leaking more than you could get into your tank. The pond is not usable. There is no really good access to the river like there used to be. They charge $40 per night to camp here. At least there was hot water.

I like the accommodations of the private campground. I don't like that hot days the electric goes out or cold days when space heaters are running electricity goes out, because they have not upgraded their electrical. This happened every year for 3 years. Bathrooms are usually dirty with full waste cans. The staff are all very kind and helpful.

This camp ground is nice! The bathrooms are always cleaned the owners are wonderful understanding people. They always make sure the trash bins are empty, Trails are made when it snows!! The only issue is when it rains potholes are made lol but what do you expect when it's dirt roads an gravel other than that I would say this is the best camp ground for a long term / short term stay! Not sure on the rooms but I can't imagine them being dirty since the camp ground is well Maintenance. 10/10 with this place!!!

What a joke! The brochure they put out for ppl to c it was nothing like that! The bathrooms were dirty, the trash cans available were full, chickens were running around free-watch your barefeet, picnic tables were in bad shape, no riverwalk, tube floating u had to go to town to get them, there's more if u want to try it! We were there for 4 days, oh well! It wasn't horrible but....it's not what they advertised, it's like staying at Sanford and sons! And the store was a bity thing, u ain't getting much-go to town! Which is close, and not enforcing quiet time and it is for sale, older couple own it

Not a bad place. Would be nicer to be by the water, the animals could be taken care of better and more accessible. The river does not run through it but goes around the outside edge of it. Highway noise sucks but not to bad.

First time camping here and I was floored by how huge the campsites were!! And full of grass so your feet and camper don’t get trashed. Big bonus! Trees everywhere! Lots of accessible trash cans scattered throughout the park, public restrooms and showers available. We had spoken to the owner when we checked in (super nice lady!) and she mentioned that they were short staffed. Sites needed mowing and little pieces of litter scattered about the sites. You could tell they were trying hard with not enough employees so that’s not a complaint! I’d come back and stay here any time! Very quiet and calm campground with access to biking/hiking/atv trails, sturgeon River within walking distance. Had an excellent weekend and absolutely will return! Thank you for such a great place to camp!

Pros: large sites, quiet for the most part Cons: At no fault of the campground, we found it odd and not to mention rude that people would just cut through your site...like right in front of where you are sitting. I am all about meeting new people and saying hello, but for people to just welcome themselves through a lot that you have rented for however long, is just weird to us. This happened more than once and it wasn't just kids. And, it also was not just our sites, we noticed people doing it everywhere. Maybe we just expect different campground etiquette. Again, no fault of the campground, but it was also buggy. The flies were terrible and as the sun went down the mosquitoes came out...bad, bad enough we refused to sit outside one night. The property could use a spray for bugs. We got eaten alive. Had some issues with the power, but it was 90 degrees and everyone was running AC. It was kind of expected because of the weather, but worth noting. The campsites were messy when we arrived, we picked up trash before we even unloaded. (not a ton, but enough that we felt the need to pick it up. The office was quite cluttered and unorganized (it was small, so hard to be organized I suppose) The farm life on site was cool, but the stacks of trash were not. Random stuff everywhere it seemed like. I think the whole property could use a good "cleaning out"... The owner that checked us in was very nice. Welcoming. Probably won't be back, not because it was a terrible experience, but only because if we are going to drive that far from home, we have other campgrounds we enjoy much better. I am not writing this review to be rude, we had a good time...just want people to know what to expect.

Unfortunately after 35 years of visiting this campground annually for our family vacation we are separating from future visits. With recent owner transitions we gave an additional 3 seasons to see improvement and have been disappointed year after year. This campground has let itself go. There are broken down vehicles with weeds growing around it, trash is not regularly picked up, grass was not mowed throughout, the playground has one slide and two swings. The campground is littered with junk throughout and broken down items without repair. The pond has been overtaken by cattails and weeds. The seasonal sites staying there are run down and not well kept or cared for. Water was shut down for several hours without communication. It doesn’t matter if you book a site-when you show up if Someone is on your site you’re just redirected to another site. We booked three sites four months in advance and had to change our sites when we arrived because we were not together. Basically in short this campground has sooooo much potential with access to nearby trails and being on the river and the beauty it once held.

Rundown. What a shame, lots of potential.

Good campground. Farm animals are very neglected there. Makes for a sad stay. Nothing fancy about this facility. Small fire rings.

We stayed at Sturgeon Valley Campground with our two horses. There is a field in the back of the campground where you can set up portable corrals/electric fencing. You have access to the 61 mile North South Central Michigan trail from the campground. You can ride into Wolverine on the weekend for a meal or ride all the way to Mackinaw City if you are so inclined. The town of Gaylord is close by with lots of shops and places to eat. Other campers were friendly and kind.
