Summit Lake SRA

Overview

Summit Lake State Recreation Area offers a tranquil escape into the rolling hills of northeast Nebraska. Centered around a 190-acre reservoir, this park is a favorite for those seeking a peaceful water-focused getaway without the crowds of larger state parks. It provides a blend of developed camping and natural beauty, making it a reliable destination for regional travelers and those crossing the Great Plains. The park is managed carefully to ensure the grounds remain pristine for outdoor enthusiasts.

Location & Surroundings

Located just a few miles west of Tekamah, NE, the park sits within the scenic Loess Hills region. The landscape is characterized by gentle slopes and diverse vegetation that provides a habitat for local wildlife like white-tailed deer and various waterfowl. Its proximity to the Missouri River valley offers a unique geographic context, where the prairie meets the water in a quiet, secluded setting. The surrounding farmland creates a sense of vast openness and big Nebraska skies that many RVers find incredibly restorative.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground features 40 electrical sites equipped with 20, 30, and 50-amp service to accommodate most modern RVs. While the park maintains a more rustic feel, it includes essential facilities to ensure a comfortable stay:

  • Handicap-accessible fishing pier and dual boat ramps.
  • A sandy swimming beach and lakeside picnic shelters.
  • A modern fish cleaning station and a playground area.

Potable water and vault toilets are available on-site, supporting a functional and relaxing outdoor experience for all guests during the camping season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities dominate the experience, with the lake being highly regarded for largemouth bass and walleye fishing among local experts. Because the lake is a strict no-wake zone, it is an ideal destination for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the historic charm of downtown Tekamah or take a short drive to the Pelican Point State Recreation Area for additional Missouri River access and riverfront views.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal fit for dedicated anglers and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, low-key environment over a bustling commercial resort. It is perfect for RVers who enjoy birdwatching or those looking for a scenic, restorative stopover while traveling through eastern Nebraska. Families looking for a traditional camping experience will appreciate the safe, calm waters and the uncomplicated, relaxed pace of the well-spaced camping loops.

Beautiful campground. Only a 4 because reservation system is a little wonky and power plus does not have water. This is a place you must use your internal water tanks, which they have potable water fill stations in multiple places. They do charge a park fee on top of the camping fee, which is $7 for Nebraska residents and $14 for non-residents. The sites themselves are very nice with lots of trees.

No wake boating, canoes welcome. Great fishing. Trails are awesome, new ones added recently. Shower house and playground. Swimming and all the things. This is my home base, so a natural favorite.

Visited this lake to do some fishing with my grandson. We had a good time and caught several pan fish. The lake is seeing a lot of seaweed/ moss growth near the shorelines and in shallow water. Very glad we had Jon boat to get out and explore. Nice fish cleaning station on the North side. There is a more primitive boat ramp on North side, better ramps are on South side but this does require a NE State Park permit to access.

Very nice facility. FYI, if there's a "reserved" sign on a campsite it doesn't mean it's reserved that day. Check with the host. The swimming area has a lot of algae, but this was in July when we visited.
