Sunken Lake Park (Alpena County Park)
Overview
Sunken Lake Park, managed by Alpena County, offers a serene escape in the heart of Northern Michigan. Located along the Thunder Bay River, this park is built on a site with deep historical roots, once serving as a logging dam during the region’s timber era. Today, it provides a quiet retreat where RVers can immerse themselves in nature. The park is well-known for its picturesque wooden footbridge that leads visitors to a scenic island, making it a favorite for those seeking a peaceful camping experience away from the hustle of more crowded tourist hubs.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Posen, Michigan, the park sits on the shores of Sunken Lake, which is technically an expansion of the Thunder Bay River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense woodlands and unique geological features typical of the Alpena area. Its secluded location provides a sense of isolation that is perfect for stargazing and wildlife viewing. Travelers arriving here will appreciate the lush canopy of trees and the gentle flow of the river, which creates a calming backdrop for any RV stay.
Amenities & Park Features
The park features a variety of sites including modern campsites with electrical hookups suitable for RVs of various sizes. Visitors have access to essential facilities such as modern restrooms and clean shower houses. For those who enjoy being on the water, the park provides a convenient boat launch, allowing easy access for fishing or paddling. Families will enjoy the on-site playground and designated picnic areas, while the sprawling green spaces offer plenty of room for outdoor relaxation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do both inside and just outside the park. Fishing for pike and bass is a popular pastime on Sunken Lake, while the river is ideal for kayaking and canoeing. A short drive takes you to the city of Alpena, where you can explore the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary or visit the historic lighthouses. Additionally, the area is famous for its limestone sinkholes and hiking trails, offering unique opportunities for day trips and exploration within the Northeast Michigan region.
Who This Park Is Best For
Sunken Lake Park is an ideal choice for nature lovers and families who prefer a rustic, quiet atmosphere over a resort-style environment. It is perfect for RVers who enjoy water-based activities like fishing and paddling but also want a home base that feels tucked away in the forest. If you are looking for a tranquil retreat to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the Great Lakes State, this county park offers the perfect blend of simplicity and scenic charm.

Love this fishing spot & day use area with playground, pavilion, trail across the Bear bridge. Definitely secluded with all of mi wild life. The smell of bears in & out the long entrance drive which is to be expected with how secluded it is....it's a gorgeous little gem of a spot!

Best place to camp in all of michigan. Fishing, camping, good people. I was worried to hear of the new park management because I just loved seeing the old guy that used to run the place, but the new kid is doing a great job! I hope to continue making family memories here. Thanks for the hospitality and a safe place to bring my kids.

How do you improve paradise? Well they found a way. It is happening now. Even with the improvements happening all around, it was a very nice stay. Plenty to do for all ages. Excellent. It's on the must see list for michigan as far as I am concerned.

This campground has potential but needs some work. There is no check-in process so it was confusing upon arrival. The lake is not treated so there are leaches making it somewhat scary to swim. LOTS of goose poop on the sites by the water. Seems like a good fishing lake. Good hiking trails. Nobody seem to be patrolling for rule enforcement. But campers were respectful and well behaved.

I've been coming to this park since I was a child and my father has been coming to this park since he was a child. It has been the backdrop of many family memories. There is a swimming area and a shallow stream area. There are two main areas of the park. A large side with the bath house, front office/store, and a majority of the camper/tent plots. There is also a smaller group of plots on the opposite side of the camp (there is a road but also trails that lead from one side to the other. There is also a bridge that leads over the stream to bear island. There are a few primitive plots on the island for tent campers. The camp has a communal space between the bathhouse and office/store where they sometimes have live music. We got to enjoy some music and some lovely wooden bench swings during Labor Day weekend. The lake and the stars are beautiful here, and we have thoroughly enjoyed camping here. That said, it seems like they are in the process of improving some of the older amenities, as the showers were a little worse for wear during our stay, but the restrooms seemed fine for a camp of this age.
