Tar Hollow
Overview
Tar Hollow State Park offers a serene escape into the heart of Ohio’s rugged foothills. Named for the pitch-pine trees that once provided tar for early settlers, this park provides a classic woodland experience for modern RVers. The atmosphere is quiet and deeply connected to nature, making it a preferred destination for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the stillness of the Appalachian Plateau.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled near the charming town of Laurelville, OH, the park is defined by the winding ridges and deep hollows of southern Ohio. The landscape is characterized by dense hardwood forests that transform into a vibrant canvas of color every autumn. The centerpiece of the area is the picturesque Pine Lake, a 15-acre body of water that provides a calm focal point for the entire park’s natural layout.
Amenities & Park Features
The Pine Lake Campground offers a variety of sites, including electric hookup options that accommodate most standard RV setups. Key amenities include:
- A designated swimming beach and boat launch for electric-motor watercraft.
- Access to the Logan Trail, a premier destination for serious hikers.
- Convenient park facilities like a general store and clean bathhouses.
The park also provides a reliable dump station and potable water fill-up areas for self-contained travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
While the park itself offers excellent fishing and boating, many travelers use it as a peaceful base to explore the world-famous Hocking Hills State Park, which is located less than 30 minutes away. Visitors can also head into the town of Laurelville to pick up local cider and baked goods. For history buffs, the nearby city of Chillicothe offers a glimpse into Ohio’s early statehood and historical landmarks.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for nature enthusiasts and families who prefer a rustic, quiet camping experience over a commercial resort vibe. It is a perfect fit for hikers and birders who want immediate access to some of the most diverse forest ecosystems in the state. If your goal is to find a secluded retreat where the sounds of the wind in the pines outweigh the sounds of traffic, this is the park for you.

I wish I could give a better review, but the place was shut down for renovation. Unless I missed something, there was no notification online that it was not open. We drove in, saw most of the park attractions were closed, then left. I was disappointed because I have the Ohio State Parks passport book and this is a park I haven't visited yet. Avoid 2025 and try next year.

Great facilities and staff. The maintenance guy, Casey, went out of his way to make sure things were right for us. He was very responsive and helpful. This was one of our best trips. There's a lot of things to see nearby and plenty to do in the park too. I'm looking forward to returning again some time. Thank you Casey and the rest of the crew that makes the park great!

According to google lens, many of the photos I took here were labeled as in Tennessee!😆 Beautiful place to unplug, 0 cell signals, some algal blooms in the lake, not as bad as most lakes in ohio.

This place is a hidden gem. The sites are endless. The campground is amazing! The staff are so extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. I met the camp host and she immediately made us feel comfortable. She gave us a bit of history of the camp, and surrounding areas. If you are looking for campground that offers so many activities for all ages as well as offing a place to just sit and relax this is the place! I look forward to coming back to make more memories!

Took a drive from Columbus to go to Tar Hollow beach. Immediately surprised when pulling in, noticing there were only a few cars. Tar Hollow Beach is filled with luscious landscape and plenty of shade for you to throw your park blanket, towels, etc. down. From what I hear, this park isn’t typically packed - which is my favorite part 😍 it’s now 5:30 pm on a holiday and we are the only ones here. Gotta love it!
