Temperance River
Overview
Temperance River State Park offers a dramatic natural landscape where the river carves through ancient basalt rock to meet Lake Superior. Located along the iconic North Shore, this destination is defined by its thundering waterfalls and rugged shoreline. Unlike many manicured RV resorts, this park provides a true immersion into the Minnesota wilderness. Travelers come here for the serene atmosphere and the opportunity to camp near one of the most unique geological features in the state. The park is famous for the fact that the river has no bar at its mouth, leading to its unique and historic name.
Location & Surroundings
Situated directly on Highway 61 in Schroeder, the park is perfectly positioned for a North Shore road trip. The campground is split between the riverside and the lakeside, providing varied views of Lake Superior and the dense boreal forest. The surroundings are characterized by steep cliffs, cobblestone beaches, and the rushing sounds of the water. It serves as a central hub for exploring the Sawtooth Mountains and the expansive Superior National Forest, offering a perfect basecamp for northern exploration and lakefront photography.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground accommodates RVs with a selection of electric hookup sites suitable for various rig sizes up to 60 feet. While the park maintains a rustic feel, visitors have access to modern seasonal amenities including seasonal showers and flush toilets located in the heart of the campground. Key features for campers include:
- Reliable electric hookups for convenient power at selected sites.
- Access to modern restroom facilities and on-site dump stations.
- Fire rings and picnic tables at every individual campsite.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of the Superior Hiking Trail which weaves through the park’s rugged terrain. The Gitchi-Gami State Trail offers a paved route for cyclists looking to take in coastal views toward Tofte. Popular activities include:
- Exploring the hidden waterfalls and deep gorges along the river.
- Biking the scenic paved trails that connect the North Shore towns.
- Searching for agates on the rocky Lake Superior beaches.
Nearby, the Lutsen Mountains offer gondola rides and seasonal recreation for travelers of all ages.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for nature photographers and active hikers who prefer scenic beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for RVers looking for a peaceful retreat away from crowded commercial parks. Those traveling in smaller to mid-sized rigs will find the wooded sites especially charming and private. If your travel style involves falling asleep to the sound of rushing water and waking up to fresh lake breezes, this is a must-visit destination for your Minnesota itinerary.

I would say Temperance River State Park is one of the best MN waterfall parks. Camping was great, the ranger was so helpful, the trails were amazing as well as the views!

gorgeous state park- many options for access to Lake Superior, sandy beach outstretched across the lower campground sites (wasn’t able to reserve a campsite here- but if they are available, definitely worth booking!), various trails & waterfalls to hike near, bathrooms were clean & well maintained. friendly park rangers as well!

Nice little hidden area that wasn't too crowded. We had fun going in the water to hunt for gates. Plenty of rocks to climb on or sit on. There are two porta potties at the top of the trail.

Absolutely beautiful stop! The waterfalls are stunning and make for amazing photo ops, and the beach walkway along Lake Superior is perfect for a peaceful stroll. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and burn some time with the family while traveling. Easy trails, fresh air, and scenic views—what more could you ask for?

Overall, I would say this is the best park on the North Shore and a contender for the best in the state. The waterfalls are awesome, with great trails and access around them. Numerous other excellent trails that connect with Superior National Forest. It has excellent overlooks, campgrounds, and day use area that are on the shores of Lake Superior. All packed into a smaller park. Plus, none of the crowds of Gooseberry and Tettegouche.
