Thousand Hills

Overview

Thousand Hills State Park offers a serene escape into the rolling hills of northeast Missouri. Centered around the expansive Forest Lake, this destination provides a blend of water-based recreation and deep-woods exploration. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend getaway or a base for exploring the Kirksville area, the park maintains a natural, peaceful atmosphere that reflects the beauty of the Missouri landscape. It is well-regarded for its conservation efforts and the preservation of the unique local savanna.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just west of Kirksville, Missouri, the park is characterized by its diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense hardwood forests to open oak savannas. The terrain is notably hilly, providing scenic overlooks of the water and surrounding valleys. It serves as a lush green pocket near the Truman State University campus, making it a convenient stop for visitors who want to remain close to city amenities while feeling completely immersed in nature. The transition from the rural outskirts of the city to the dense forest canopy creates a striking sense of arrival.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground accommodates RVers with several electric hookup sites that cater to various rig sizes. Visitors have access to modern conveniences including:

  • A central shower house with hot water.
  • On-site laundry facilities for long-term travelers.
  • A convenient dump station for RV maintenance.

For those traveling with children, the playground and open green spaces are highlights. The park marina also offers boat rentals and supplies for a full day on the water. Many sites are well-shaded, providing a cool retreat during the humid Missouri summers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore miles of rugged terrain on the Thousand Hills Trail, which is popular for both hiking and mountain biking. Forest Lake is the centerpiece for activity, offering a sandy swimming beach and excellent opportunities for fishing for crappie and bass. Just a short drive away, the city of Kirksville provides local dining, museums, and cultural events. Visitors can also explore the Missouri Department of Conservation areas nearby for additional wildlife viewing and hunting opportunities during the appropriate seasons.

We had a blast except for the chiggers, they ate us alive. My mom and the dogs did not get chiggers on them, however my dad and I were in the rocks down by the lake, and we were covered in them. Be chigger aware everybody!! We stayed in the camp 2 which was so clean and nice. The shower houses were cleaned while we were there and it was so nice to have hot water, and flush toilets. We also rented a cabin for one night and it was so clean and nice, not brand new but definitely all we needed. The staff at the restaurant and the marina were very nice and extremely helpful. I would definitely stay here again, I would just be aware of the chiggers. 🙂‍↕️👍

We had such an amazing time at 1,000 Hills that we booked next year's visit before we left. The cabins were clean and well stocked. The views are spectacular. Food at the restaurant far exceeded our expectations. The hiking trails are clearly marked. We rented a pontoon boat and had a picnic lunch on the lake. Thank you, Randy, for taking such good care of us!!

We stayed in campground 2.Peaceful setting. Extremely clean! Large bathrooms. A beautiful paved walking path that leads to The Lakeshore Grill. Highly recommend eating there.
