Tinnemaha Creek (Inyo County Park)
Overview
Tinnemaha Creek Campground offers a rugged and authentic experience for travelers exploring the vast, open landscapes of the Owens Valley. This Inyo County facility is situated in a high-desert environment, providing a quiet and affordable alternative to more crowded commercial sites. It serves as a peaceful basecamp where the sounds of the wind and the nearby creek replace the noise of the highway, offering a raw connection to nature that is rare in developed regions.
Location & Surroundings
Located just south of Big Pine, California, the park is framed by the dramatic, snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Sierra and the majestic White Mountains to the east. The surrounding terrain is characterized by sagebrush and lush riparian vegetation that hugs the creek banks. Its proximity to the Tinnemaha Reservoir and the Los Angeles Aqueduct makes it a unique geographic location for those interested in the water history and expansive vistas of the region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive camping destination, visitors should prepare for a dry camping experience. The park provides essential but basic amenities, including vault toilets, picnic tables, and metal fire rings at each site. There are no utility hookups or trash collection services available, which requires a strictly enforced pack-it-in, pack-it-out policy. While seasonal water may be available at a central spigot, RVers are strongly encouraged to arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty gray tanks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore nearby, starting with excellent fishing opportunities along the Owens River and the nearby reservoir. For hikers, the trailhead for Big Pine Creek is just a short drive away, leading to spectacular glacial lakes and the southernmost glacier in the United States. The park also provides a convenient jumping-off point for visiting the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to some of the oldest living trees on Earth.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate solitude and a minimalist lifestyle. It appeals specifically to nature photographers looking to capture the morning Alpenglow on the Sierra Nevada peaks and anglers seeking a quiet spot away from the crowds. If you prefer off-grid living and the freedom of the high desert over resort-style amenities, this rustic county park offers the perfect blend of simplicity and stunning natural beauty.

Quiet area with a stream close by making for a relaxing ambiance of white noise. Views from everywhere. Just beware of the numerous cow manure pies. Very small area of service for T-Mobile, though slow if able to find. Plenty of room for large RV's. Pit toilets and dumpsters available. Easy campground to access, though stream sees severe fishing pressure. No sign of any campground officials during my 3 days. Northeastern part of park experiences to the right sees frequent commercial truck traffic passing through that area.

Tinnemaha camp grounds in an absolutely gorgeous spot to get away from the city, the campsite does not have beds, electricity or any other "hotel amenities" you might expect, come ready to park and set up camp! If you're coming with a group, Tinnemaha is perfect, the creek is perfect for cooling off after hiking & baking in the sun! Definitely worth a desert visit! 🏜
