Visitors are often captivated by the tranquil atmosphere and the opportunity to stay in one of the most northern reaches of the world’s largest temperate rainforest. The park is situated at the northern terminus of Halibut Point Road, approximately seven miles from downtown Sitka. Its position provides convenient access for travelers arriving via the Alaska Marine Highway, as the ferry terminal is just a short drive away. The campground is partitioned into loops, offering views of the muskeg and the creek, ensuring that every visitor feels a deep connection to the Alaskan environment.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic destination designed for those who enjoy dry camping amidst nature. The park features paved RV pads that can accommodate various rig sizes, though it is important to note that there are no electrical or water hookups. On-site facilities include:
- Vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water
- Bear-resistant food lockers for safety
- Fire rings and picnic tables at every site
These features allow campers to focus on the sounds of the surrounding forest rather than the noise of a traditional crowded RV park.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity near the campground. The Estuary Boardwalk provides an easy, accessible path for viewing salmon runs and local birdlife. For a more vigorous challenge, the Mosquito Cove Trail offers a scenic loop through the forest with stunning views of the coastline. Who This Park Is Best For
Starrigavan is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural beauty and quiet over modern resort luxuries. It is a perfect fit for travelers looking to explore the historic charm of Sitka while maintaining a basecamp in the wild. If you appreciate waking up to the scent of Sitka spruce and the call of bald eagles, this national forest camping experience will likely be the highlight of your journey through the Last Frontier.

5 stars all around, though you should know there is NO (room) service. It's a cabin, not a hotel. You pack it in, you pack it out. The well is nearby so water is no worry typically, though you might want to bring some anyway just in case it's not running well (

The cabin is completely amazing with locally sourced wood, it’s a bit cold in the winter but when you have a nice fire going opening windows is a must. The river behind the cabin is great by itself its common to see fish in September as they go upstream. Bathrooms are located close to the cabin itself along with a water spigot for the non-winter months. When staying here its super quite at night and I find it super relaxing, the outside fire pit is amazing. The cabin prices did increase to $75 prior to 2020. Vehicle access ends when the sunsets or close to it for example in September it will close around 7 pm but in November it will close at 4 pm. During April and August, it will close around 8 pm (9 pm late May) all gates are marked with the gate hours. The USFS has a host cabin onsite when occupied the representative will be more than happy to unlock the gate for anyone accidentally locked in. During the winter months the gates are kept closed due to dangerous road conditions but a walk into the cabin is a great experience and the host will help you bring your belongings to the cabin during this time.

Price increased from $50 night to $70 summer 2021. Hours of access to campground seriously limited. Gate locked earlier at 08:00 PM... mid Sept locked at 7PM. NO ENTRY OR EXIT ONCE LOCKED...except by foot. Boardwalk entry closed to foot access due to Bear activity in Aug and Sept

Caveat, I didn’t camp here, although I wish I did. I just walked through after hiking Mosquito Cove. Lovely camp sites and day use areas. Very tasty water from artesian well.
