Tonto/Burnt Corral

Overview

Burnt Corral Campground offers a quintessential desert escape situated along the eastern shore of Apache Lake in the heart of the Tonto National Forest. This recreation area provides a peaceful retreat for those looking to experience the rugged beauty of the Arizona wilderness. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, the park captures a tranquil atmosphere that contrasts with the busy urban centers nearby. It is a place where the sounds of the water and the desert wind take center stage, providing a slow-paced environment for relaxation.

Location & Surroundings

Located near Roosevelt, AZ, the campground is nestled within a dramatic landscape of steep canyons and saguaro-studded hillsides. The journey to the park often involves navigating the historic Apache Trail, which offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains and canyons. The park sits directly on the banks of Apache Lake, providing easy access to one of the most scenic water bodies in the region. The low-elevation desert environment ensures warm temperatures and unique wildlife sightings throughout the year.

Amenities & Park Features

As a forest service site, the park focuses on a rustic experience. The campground features paved parking spurs that can accommodate a variety of RV sizes, though there are no hookups available at this location. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring for evening gatherings under the stars. Visitors have access to potable water and well-maintained vault toilets located throughout the loops. A major highlight for many is the direct access to a boat ramp, making it easy to launch watercraft for a day on the lake.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for visitors is Apache Lake, where RVers enjoy fishing for bass, waterskiing, and kayaking along the shorelines. Just a short drive away, history enthusiasts can explore the Tonto National Monument, which protects well-preserved Salado cliff dwellings overlooking the basin. The massive Theodore Roosevelt Dam is another nearby landmark worth visiting. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the surrounding Tonto National Forest is crisscrossed with hiking trails that offer stunning perspectives of the Salt River chain of lakes.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for RVers who prefer boondocking or dry camping in a natural setting rather than a manicured resort. It is a fantastic choice for boaters and anglers who want to be steps away from the water. Travelers seeking a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience will find exactly what they are looking for here. If you value stargazing, wildlife watching, and a sense of solitude within the Arizona desert, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Loved it here, they keep it clean and most campers were respectful of other campers. The spot we had was right by the one way road to get to the exit/boat ramp. Bathroom facilities were clean and minimal, but at least you could go in privately.

We love the burnt coral campground. It's a little favorite gem for the whole family. Facilities are clean. People are friendly. The camp hosts are awesome. And fishing is good.

The generator start time of 6a is wild; 6am is crazy early. Toilets were clean, and they have potable water. Beautiful spot with both private and not-so-private spots. Came without reservation and had no issue finding privacy. Expect some noise and being in close proximity to others even without direct lines of sight. As long as you’re good with that, it’s a good spot. If you don’t like kids or people when you camp, this place is not for you.

Nice area but crowded. Most of it is by the water which is nice and there was many trees. We got there through the 88 and it’s a small road and one way in many areas, it’s the scenic route, but with a camper or pulling a boat I would not recommend. Take the 87 instead. It’s a good camp area overall.
