Tonto/Windy Hill

Overview

Windy Hill Campground serves as a premier destination for those exploring the Tonto National Forest in central Arizona. As one of the largest developed campgrounds in the region, it provides a sprawling layout designed to accommodate a high volume of visitors while maintaining a sense of natural immersion. Situated on the shores of Theodore Roosevelt Lake, this facility offers a gateway to some of the most impressive desert and water landscapes in the state.

Location & Surroundings

Located roughly 30 miles northwest of Globe, the park is nestled within the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert. The landscape is defined by towering saguaros, scrub brush, and the expansive blue waters of the lake. Travelers will appreciate the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Ancha Mountains, which provides a stunning contrast against the arid environment. The site is conveniently accessed via Highway 188, making it a reliable stop for those traversing the scenic Apache Trail.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park focuses on a more natural experience, it offers several key amenities for RVers. Most sites feature paved parking pads and are equipped with fire rings and picnic tables. While there are no individual water or electric hookups, the facility provides access to potable water hydrants and centrally located bathhouses with flush toilets and showers. Boating enthusiasts will find the multi-lane boat ramps and fish cleaning stations particularly useful for a day on the water.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is Roosevelt Lake, where visitors enjoy top-tier bass fishing and water skiing. For those interested in history and culture, the Tonto National Monument is just a short drive away, featuring well-preserved Salado cliff dwellings. Hikers can explore a variety of trails within the national forest that showcase unique geological formations and native wildlife. The nearby Roosevelt Dam also offers an interesting stop for those curious about local infrastructure and history.

Who This Park Is Best For

This location is ideal for travelers who prioritize waterfront access and outdoor recreation over luxury resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for self-contained RVers who are comfortable with dry camping in exchange for breathtaking views and spacious sites. Families often gravitate here due to the on-site playgrounds and group picnic areas, making it a favorite for weekend gatherings or extended fishing trips in the heart of Arizona's high desert.

Great campground ⛺️ but the rules and regulations where not respecting: camping fire 🔥 when its is forbidden, ACs are running the whole night 😬 why people go to the nature and stay all day long in the RVs?

Nice feeling when first time campers leave a note, see pic below. I love being a host at Chipmunk Campsite in Windy Hill Recreation. Unfortunately after 4 years, in 2024 the management has gotten so bad and treats volunteers extremely poorly, that I've left.

Windy hill max length 32 feet per forest website. Coati is now max 20 as a 45 ft. Got caught and messed up in coati. Host does little to nothing. Tp and that is it. Same as last winter. Three campgrounds all practically parking lots while hundreds of good sites go fallow or locked. What a waste.

What an amazing weekend getaway at Windy Hill CG- Chipmunk Loop. Delayed in my review but went there a few months ago (Cinco de Mayo weekend I think) and it was peaceful beautiful and perfect. The grounds are kept immaculate by Dave the CG Host. He’s got tips and stories from his long standing stint there so you won’t be disappointed. The bathrooms were clean, no trash or weeds unkept. We had a single site with picnic table and fire ring. Plenty of space for our 10 man tent with some shade trees for hammock. Dave was very helpful, gracious, and professional in his duties and just had an all around great demeanor - sometimes you get the grumpiest unhelpful hosts and can put a real damper on the trip. Not Dave-he welcomed us then and we will happily return to Chipmunk Loop again in the future!
