Walnut Woods
Overview
Walnut Woods State Park offers a peaceful retreat tucked away in the bustling Des Moines metropolitan area. Spanning 260 acres, this park is home to one of the largest natural stands of black walnut trees in the country. It provides a unique balance of forested seclusion and modern convenience, making it a favorite for travelers passing through central Iowa who prefer a quiet, natural setting over a standard roadside stop. The atmosphere is calm and shaded, offering a refreshing break from the open Iowa prairies.
Location & Surroundings
Situated along the banks of the Raccoon River in West Des Moines, the park feels surprisingly remote despite its proximity to major highways. The landscape is defined by bottomland hardwood forest and rolling terrain. The surrounding area offers easy access to the river for water activities while maintaining a buffer of dense foliage that dampens the sounds of the nearby city, creating a serene atmosphere for evening relaxation and riverfront exploration.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 22 campsites, including full hookup sites and several with electric-only service. RVers will appreciate the modern restroom and shower facilities, along with a sanitary dump station. One of the standout features is the bird-watching blind, which allows visitors to observe local wildlife in a quiet, undisturbed environment. The park also includes a historic lodge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, adding a touch of classic architecture to the grounds.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over two miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails. The Raccoon River provides excellent opportunities for fishing and canoeing, with a convenient boat ramp located within the park. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Historic Valley Junction for unique shopping or visit Raccoon River Park for beach access and extensive multi-use trails that connect to the broader Des Moines trail system.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature lovers and birders who want to stay close to urban amenities without sacrificing the outdoor experience. Its smaller size and wooded lots appeal to those seeking a more intimate, quiet camping environment. It is also an excellent choice for traveling families who need a safe, natural home base while exploring the shopping, dining, and cultural attractions of the greater Des Moines area.

Stayed in campsite 18 for the holiday weekend. Nice quiet campground overall. It rained quite a bit and the campsite was a muddy mess with several inches of water standing on the pad under my camper. Have a lot of cleanup to do at home today on the camper. The pedestrian bridge is very nice and a nice walk for the dogs.
