Nestled just 25 minutes outside of downtown Des Moines, Walnut Woods State Park Campground offers a serene escape into nature without straying too far from the city’s conveniences. This 260-acre park is surrounded by the scenic Raccoon River and Iowa’s largest stand of black walnut trees, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers. Scenic Beauty and Natural Attractions Walnut Woods State Park is renowned for its picturesque landscapes. The campground is shaded by mature trees, providing a cool and peaceful environment, especially during the hot summer months. The Raccoon River meanders through the park, offering beautiful views and a tranquil atmosphere. You can fish from the riverbank or launch your boat from the ramp located on the west end of the park. The changing water levels add a dynamic element to the scenery. Well-Maintained Facilities The campground at Walnut Woods is meticulously maintained, ensuring a comfortable stay for all visitors. All campsites are equipped with electric hookups, and eight sites even offer water and sewer connections. Modern restrooms are available, though the campground does not have showers, it does contain a sanitary dump station. The paved and mostly level sites make it easy for both tents and RVs to find a suitable spot. Recreational Activities Walnut Woods State Park offers a variety of recreational activities to suit different interests. Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy over two miles of trails that wind through the wooded bottomland along the Raccoon River. Birdwatching is also a popular activity, with a bird blind observation station in the park and the Purple Martin Water Resource Area nearby. In the winter, cross-country skiing is a favorite pastime. Unique Features One of the standout features of Walnut Woods State Park is the recently renovated 1930s CCC lodge. This historic lodge can be reserved for weddings, graduations, or large family gatherings and offers both indoor and outdoor fireplaces, along with a shaded outdoor shelter area and lawn. The park also features several shaded picnic areas with fire grills, perfect for a family barbecue. Convenient Location The campground’s close proximity to Interstate 35 and the State Highway 5 Bypass makes it easily accessible. It is also just three miles from the Great Western multi-use trailhead, which links Des Moines and Martensdale along its paved, 16.5-mile path. This makes it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area. Friendly and Knowledgeable Staff The staff at Walnut Woods State Park are friendly and dedicated to ensuring that your stay is enjoyable. They are always ready to assist with any questions or concerns you may have, making your camping experience as smooth as possible. Stayed in campsite 18 for the holiday weekend. Nice quiet campground overall. It rained quite a bit and the campsite was a muddy mess with several inches of water standing on the pad under my camper. Have a lot of cleanup to do at home today on the camper. The pedestrian bridge is very nice and a nice walk for the dogs.

Awesome smaller family friendly state park property. Bird watching, hiking, biking, picnic areas and launch ramp and playground are a few of the park features. Nice campground with dump station, didn't see any showers however. A new pedestrian bridge over the river connecting Raccoon Park is almost finished which will expand the hiking and biking options. Day use access is fee free but donations are recommended. Good parking large enough for any size rig or RV. I had 3 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming.

Booked for my wedding ceremony and reception for about 50 people. Perfect size. Two bathrooms inside, a kitchen equipped with microwave, fridge w/ freezer, oven, and sink! 70 wood chairs. Three 6ft buffet tables in the cleaning closet. Amplified sound is not allowed in state parks so no live bands or DJs, heads up. Air conditioned. Just overall affordable and comfortable
