Wells Gray Park/Manhood Lake

Overview

Mahood Lake Campground offers a secluded wilderness experience within the southwestern corner of Wells Gray Provincial Park. Unlike the more developed corridor of the park, this area provides a tranquil escape surrounded by old-growth forests and pristine waters. It is a destination for travelers seeking a primitive camping experience where the sounds of nature replace the hum of technology. The park operates on a first-come, first-served basis, emphasizing a slower pace of life for those looking to immerse themselves in the deep woods of British Columbia.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated at the western end of Mahood Lake, approximately 88 kilometers east of 100 Mile House via Canim Lake Road. Visitors should be prepared for a significant stretch of well-maintained gravel road to reach the site, making the journey part of the adventure. The landscape is dominated by the Cariboo Mountains and lush interior rainforest. Because of its remote location, the area remains remarkably quiet, offering clear night skies and a deep sense of isolation from the bustle of urban life.

Amenities & Park Features

As a provincial park facility, the amenities are designed to maintain a rustic atmosphere. There are no power or water hookups available, making it essential for RVers to arrive with full tanks and sufficient solar or battery power. The park provides several key features for travelers:

  • Private, spacious campsites equipped with sturdy fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables.
  • Access to shared pit toilets and hand-pumped well water stations.
  • A concrete boat launch suitable for launching various motorized and non-motorized watercraft.
  • A small playground area located conveniently near the beach for families.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based activities are the primary draw, with Mahood Lake offering excellent opportunities for swimming, kayaking, and fishing for rainbow trout. Hiking enthusiasts can explore trails leading to the spectacular Canim Falls and Mahood Falls, where the water drops over ancient lava flows. The nearby Deception Falls also offers a scenic trek through the forest, providing a perfect day trip for those wanting to explore the lush wilderness and volcanic history of the Cariboo region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-sufficient RVers who prioritize solitude and natural beauty over modern resort conveniences. If you enjoy boondocking and want to disconnect from cellular service and Wi-Fi, this is the perfect retreat. It is best suited for outdoor enthusiasts and families who love water sports, photography, and hiking. Due to the long gravel access road, it is a favorite for those with durable rigs looking for a peaceful lakeside paradise far off the beaten path.

An excellent spot. Definitely remember to bring water as it needs to be boiled from the taps, but excellent care of bathrooms

It was beautiful, it was fairly quiet and the beach and lake were fantastic. Only downside which is uncontrollable camping near a lake is the mosquitoes, horse flies and all the other bugs that bite.... however that's just what comes with camping... had a fantastic time at mahood lake

Dog owners beware of black flies! We were there for only 2 nights and when we arrived home and bathed our golden retriever we noticed many many spots on her tummy, groin, armpits, ears and chest (see last photo). They aren’t harmful apparently and don’t require treatment but the spots look scary. Also A LOT of noseeum’s & mosquitos biting us. So bring lots of mosquito spray and bug deterrents. Otherwise- the campsite was great & well maintained, fairly quiet (when we went), dog friendly “beach”, nice lake, three waterfalls nearby (6-15minute drive and a short walk), pit toilets available & cleanish. I’d go back but would be weary of the bugs & our doggo.
