West Fork Campground (BLM)
Overview
Overview
West Fork Campground, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, offers a quintessential Alaskan wilderness experience for those traveling the Top of the World Highway. This rustic, undeveloped campground is tucked away near the remote town of Chicken, providing a quiet retreat from the bustling tourist corridors. It serves as an ideal base for travelers seeking solitude, authentic interior Alaska scenery, and an immersive outdoor stay beneath the vast northern sky.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in the heart of the historic Fortymile Mining District, this campground is located near the West Fork of the Dennison River. The surrounding landscape is defined by boreal forests and rugged mountainous terrain, typical of the Alaskan interior. Its remote positioning along the Taylor Highway makes it a strategic stopover for adventurers navigating the stretch between Tok and the Canadian border, offering deep access to the wilderness of the interior highlands.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive BLM site, West Fork Campground provides a true off-grid experience. Visitors will find basic gravel campsites designed to accommodate modest RV setups and tents. The facilities include vault toilets and fire rings for evening campfires. Because there are no utility hookups or potable water systems, self-sufficiency is a necessity here. It is the perfect spot for those who appreciate minimalist camping infrastructure amidst pristine, untouched natural surroundings.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw of this area is the proximity to the historic town of Chicken, famous for its gold mining heritage and eccentric atmosphere. Travelers often spend their days exploring the surrounding public lands, which are popular for gold panning, wildlife viewing, and scenic photography. The nearby river offers opportunities for quiet reflection or hiking through the subarctic landscape. It is a prime location for travelers who prefer independent exploration over structured tourism activities.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is best suited for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy dry camping and want to escape the crowd. It is ideal for those who value peace, quiet, and a direct connection to nature over modern resort amenities. If your travel style favors remote wilderness settings, birdwatching, and exploring the remnants of Alaska's Gold Rush history, West Fork Campground provides an authentic, no-frills gateway into the Alaskan interior.

Awsum, cool Incredible and fun
We have spent years in mining camps so our opinions may be a little bias, it is the nicest, cleanest obviously one of the most respected campgrounds in the state of Alaska, took us right back to our younger years of the late 70's. Five star all the way, so nice to see a campground in such beautiful condition, a rare place that makes you proud to be an American, kudos to BLM!!

Very nice campground, very nice host. Stayed September 2023. Potable water available. Spotless vault toilets. Clean sites.

Best campground in Alaska! $12/night, free wood, potable water, the sweetest camp hosts, and the best part… the bathrooms. Huge spotlessly clean cedar buildings with plenty of tp and automatic hand sanitizer dispensers. It smelled deliciously of cedar and I’d like to just hang out in there. The sites were beautiful and they’re not far from a nice little grayling creek and a ton of wild blueberries. I’d love to stay here again next time I pass through!

If I can leave 10 stars I would. This place is so magical and the photos I posted are just so beautiful, out of this world, and will keep you mesmerized for sometime. There’s not much hiking but there are accesses for ATVs and the tranquility is what you need to soak up there. A must see, FYI the photos are not enhanced.
