Whalen Island County Campground

Overview

Whalen Island County Campground offers a unique coastal experience nestled within the Sand Lake Estuary. This Tillamook County park provides a serene escape from the more crowded coastal resorts, focusing on the raw beauty of the Oregon shoreline. It is a place where the tides dictate the rhythm of the day, making it a favorite for those seeking a rustic camping experience surrounded by water and wildlife.

Location & Surroundings

Located just north of Pacific City in Cloverdale, the campground is situated on a small island connected to the mainland by a short bridge. It is part of the Clay Myers State Natural Area, providing guests with direct access to lush wetlands and salt marshes. The surrounding geography creates a protected pocket away from the harsh ocean winds, offering a tranquil atmosphere perfect for observing the diverse ecosystem of the Oregon Coast.

Amenities & Park Features

As a county-managed facility, the park focuses on essential comforts rather than luxury amenities. The park features include:

  • 34 primitive campsites primarily designed for dry camping without hookups.
  • Access to vault toilets and potable water stations located throughout the loops.
  • A public boat launch and picnic areas for day-use and overnight guests.

Each individual site includes a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, ensuring a classic camping experience amidst the coastal wilderness. It is important to note that there is no dump station on-site.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, starting with the 1.5-mile loop trail that circles the island and offers stunning views of the estuary. The calm waters are ideal for kayaking and paddleboarding, especially during high tide when the marsh fills. For a change of pace, the towering sand dunes of the Sand Lake Recreation Area are nearby, while the iconic Haystack Rock at Pacific City is just a short drive south for world-class beachcombing.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for RVers who prioritize nature and solitude over modern conveniences. It is a haven for birdwatchers and photographers who want to capture the shifting light over the marshes. Because of the limited turn-around space and lack of hookups, it is best suited for smaller campers, vans, or self-contained rigs looking for a quiet retreat to unplug and reconnect with the natural world.

The campground is on the smaller side, with 33 sites packed into a pretty tight loop. The surrounding area is absolutely magnificent, beautiful, glorious, and all the other things nature can be. Wonderful bird watching.

I loved the natural vibe here. Very peaceful. It doesn’t have a lot of amenities, but also no crowds! It’s a great place to relax and clear your mind. Nature is very healing.

Camping can fill up during busy times. Also pay day use area. Rabbits and lots of shore birds. Some thinking and relaxing in the island. The turn the the road can be hard to see if driving fast on 101.

This camping site is built in harmony with the beautiful scenery. The reason why I've already visited this place for the 3rd time is because there is a very good trail course, and it's a great place. If you walk along the secluded path, you can see the sea view and Wild natural area overlooking the sand beach, and you can enjoy a very refreshing trail with a reasonable distance. It's a flaw that there aren't many parking lots, but it's also a great place. I highly recommend it.

Driving through the 3 capes area looking for a camp site for the night for our RV. We passed a lot of private full hook up sites. We prefer to "boondock " and come across this place. There was only us there until another RV turned up after dark. Scenic peaceful area overlooking sandy Bay full of wild birds, blue herons, egrets, rabbits. If you're looking for simple out of the way and from crowds stay here.
