White Mountain/Jigger Johnson Campground
Overview
Jigger Johnson Campground offers a classic New Hampshire camping experience within the heart of the White Mountain National Forest. Named after a legendary local woodsman, this facility provides a serene environment for travelers who want to immerse themselves in the rugged beauty of the Northeast. Located along the legendary Kancamagus Highway, it serves as a premier destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The campground is seasonal, typically welcoming visitors from late spring through the vibrant autumn foliage season, offering a front-row seat to some of the best natural displays in New England.
Location & Surroundings
Set near the crystal-clear Swift River, the campground is surrounded by towering hardwoods and dense pines in the town of Bartlett, NH. The location is characterized by its high-elevation mountain air and dramatic granite peaks that define the region. Travelers can enjoy the soothing sounds of the nearby water while being perfectly positioned to explore the scenic overlooks of the White Mountains. The surrounding forest provides a dense canopy that offers excellent privacy and shade, making the sites feel secluded and deeply integrated into the natural landscape.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a rustic facility that emphasizes a natural experience over high-tech luxury. While there are no hookups available for RVs, the campground provides essential comforts including flush toilets and potable water via hand pumps. A standout feature for many RVers is the availability of coin-operated showers, a rare and welcome convenience for a National Forest campground. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a heavy-duty fire ring. The park features paved loops that help keep dust down, though the sites themselves are gravel and vary in levelness.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The location provides immediate access to the Kancamagus Scenic Byway, offering miles of breathtaking mountain driving and photography opportunities. History buffs will appreciate the nearby Russell-Colbath Historic Site, while outdoor enthusiasts can tackle the popular trail to Champney Falls. For those looking to relax by the water, the Swift River offers numerous spots for cooling off in natural swimming holes like Lower Falls or Rocky Gorge. These geological features are perfect for picnicking and exploring the unique rock formations carved by glacial meltwater over centuries.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is an ideal match for boondockers and RVers who enjoy dry camping in a genuine forest setting. It is best suited for small to mid-sized trailers and campervans, as the narrow turns and tree-lined sites are not designed for modern big-rig motorhomes. If you prioritize stunning natural scenery, wildlife watching, and direct trail access over resort amenities like Wi-Fi or cable, Jigger Johnson is the perfect fit. It is a favorite for hikers, landscape photographers, and families who want a traditional camping experience without digital distractions.

I didn't use the campground but it looked lovely - flat big lots etc. I did use the coin-op showers though! 10 quarters for 7 minutes - hot water with good pressure, very nice! Must insert at least 10 quarters to get water, don't do what I tried and use 4 quarters for a fraction of the time. It's all or nothing!

Camped here for the last 6 nights and it was great! We paid for an extra night through labor day so we could pack up and leave around 4pm. The roads and trails around the campground are immaculate and the bathrooms are well cleaned and plenty of tp, just bring your own soap

Needed a mini vacation, this place was a perfect , relaxing, beautiful, quiet, clean place! Great place to unwind. Bathrooms are clean but there is very little to no soap in the bathroom. In the bathroom with the handicapped stall there was a bottle with very little water filled soap. I think you’re supposed to bring your own. So for people coming here, I recommend bringing your own hand soap. I am disabled and wanted to let people know for those who need a handicapped bathroom stall this place has one, big and clean. Jigger Johnson’s has its own private access to the swift river, my brother and I had lots of fun relaxing, swimming and tubing!

Camped with a small RV in the 3rd week of June. Plenty of site availability. Spacious and level everywhere. Nested under the trees. We are self contained so didn’t use the facilities. Bugs were not too bad - a little sparky and they stayed away. No dump station here and, our only gripe, had to be creative to add water to our rig since the water stations are not threaded for hose connectors. Camp host was pleasant and accommodating. Short walk to the sandy banks of the Swift River.

I’ve been coming here since 1994 as a toddler and just about every summer since. Never had an issue with camp hosts. Have never been confronted or told to put out a fire past a certain time. Have never been confronted about payment either. Neighbors are usually respectful and I personally have never had an issue. The bathrooms are clean with running water and the sites for the most part are kept up with as well. The sites do have a decent amount of privacy although I do feel as the years have gone on there’s been a good amount of thinning of the trees between sites and they have become more open which is disappointing but do understand that sometimes it has to be done. Overall I enjoy this campground and will continue to keep coming back with family. We have a trip planned for later this month and we are all very excited to come back!
