White River/Gore Creek
Overview
Gore Creek Campground offers a quintessential Rocky Mountain experience within the sprawling White River National Forest. As a high-elevation gateway near Vail, this park allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the rugged beauty and thin air of the Colorado wilderness. It provides a truly authentic camping experience where the tranquil sounds of rushing water define the stay, making it a serene, natural alternative to the busier luxury resort areas found elsewhere in the valley.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a few miles east of the bustling Vail Village, the campground sits at a breath-taking elevation of approximately 8,700 feet. The sites are nestled along the banks of Gore Creek, surrounded by a thick, fragrant canopy of aspen, spruce, and lodgepole pine. This location offers immediate proximity to the Eagle’s Nest Wilderness, providing a dramatic backdrop of jagged granite peaks and lush forest floors that change beautifully with the alpine seasons.
Amenities & Park Features
The facilities at this park are intentionally rustic to preserve the natural landscape and forest integrity. Visitors will find:
- Vault toilets that are maintained regularly for guest comfort.
- Potable water accessible via traditional hand-operated pumps.
- Individual sites featuring sturdy picnic tables and heavy-duty fire rings.
Because there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups available, visitors should arrive prepared for a dry camping experience. The park layout is thoughtfully designed to maximize privacy between campsites while highlighting the local flora.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this specific region of the White River National Forest. Guests can access the Gore Creek Trail directly from the campground, which leads hikers toward stunning alpine lakes and wildflower meadows. The creek itself is a designated gold-medal fishing stream, making it a premier destination for dedicated fly fishing enthusiasts. Additionally, the proximity to Vail allows for easy day trips to enjoy upscale dining or the scenic gondola rides.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is best suited for self-contained RVers and adventure seekers who enjoy a primitive, off-grid atmosphere. Due to the natural terrain and specific site dimensions, it is ideal for smaller trailers, truck campers, and adventure-ready campervans. Travelers who prioritize direct access to backcountry hiking and high-altitude solitude over modern resort-style amenities will find this to be the perfect basecamp for their Colorado mountain retreat.

The camp host at Gore Creek Campground was terrific friendly, helpful, attentive and The bathrooms were so clean there was paper. There was a garbage can that had been tented and there was plenty of hand sanitizer very clean very appreciated. This guy is terrific. This particular site was off the chart so beautiful It’s The fall season and the Aspen are breathtaking. The reviews say that it wasn’t appreciated because bears were not in the vicinity, but darn it we didn’t see one.

Great location. The campsites are spacious and feel private. Great bear boxes. The pit toilets might be some of the cleanest I've ever seen. The staff is also very friendly. Site 11 is close to the river which is nice but the site itself isn't very level and it was hard to find a spot for our tent. They best place was a spot which was under some trees but the was close to some restrooms. The table kept rocking as well because it couldn't be leveled. Depending on the wind you can expect to smell the pit toilets. I really liked the campground and would definitely come back but I'd probably look for another campsite.

Gorgeous campground 10 minutes from Vail. Enjoy the sound of the creek (and a little highway noise) at one of their fairly secluded sites. Pictured, is site 23. Note that sites 20-25 do require a short hike in. Level tent area, picnic table, fire pit, and bear proof box provided at each. Bathrooms located in the parking lot - seriously, the cleanest camping bathrooms I've ever had! Simple booking through the recreation.gov app!

Gore Creek worked well for us for two nights on our way through. We have an F350 and an 18' trailer and most sites were fine. The sites by the creek are beautiful, although if you have very small children you'll need to watch them as the water moves fast and the snowmelt continues into the summer. Shaun T(?) the caretaker was great. We did have a black bear in camp, who snuck up to within 20' of our 5 year old son before our dog alerted us to his presence.

Gorgeous location, lots of shade, right on gore creek. The camp host took great care of the restrooms. All of the restrooms were clean.
