Wildcat Den
Overview
Wildcat Den State Park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance near the banks of the Mississippi River. This park is renowned for its historic Pine Creek Grist Mill, which dates back to 1848 and stands as a testament to Iowa's early industrial history. Spanning over 420 acres, the park invites travelers to step away from the bustling highway and immerse themselves in a landscape defined by dramatic sandstone bluffs and winding creeks.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away just northeast of Muscatine, IA, the park is situated within the scenic, rugged terrain of the Mississippi River valley. The surroundings are characterized by deep ravines and lush forests, providing a stark contrast to the surrounding agricultural plains. Visitors will find themselves surrounded by unique rock formations such as Steamboat Rock and the Devil’s Punch Bowl, making it one of the most visually striking public lands in eastern Iowa.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground at Wildcat Den provides a more rustic, non-modern experience for RVers who prefer a peaceful environment over resort-style luxuries. There are 28 campsites available, supported by vault toilets and water hydrants rather than full hookups or shower buildings. Each site offers a wooded setting that emphasizes privacy and connection with nature. While amenities are basic, the park features well-maintained picnic shelters and several miles of interconnected trails that are easily accessible from the camping area.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the campground, the Pine Creek Grist Mill and the Melpine Schoolhouse offer fascinating glimpses into the 19th century through guided tours and historical displays. Hikers can explore a diverse trail system that weaves through narrow canyons and up to scenic overlooks. For a change of pace, the nearby city of Muscatine offers the National Pearl Button Museum and a beautiful riverfront park, making it an easy day trip for those staying at the state park.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy a quiet, primitive atmosphere and do not mind the lack of modern hookups. It is a perfect match for history enthusiasts and photographers looking to capture the architecture of the mill or the textures of the sandstone cliffs. If you prioritize scenic solitude and hiking over high-speed internet and paved pads, Wildcat Den offers a refreshing and memorable stop on your Iowa journey.

My wife and I hiked through the punch bowl trail up to devil's alley and saw fat man's squeeze. Trails were challenging with the tree leaves covering where we were trying to get traction one stair step was loose to the point it could be a hazard but we made it and back up the backbone ridge to our vehicle just as the sun set. A bit of a challenge if you aren't very physically fit. Beautiful park and views. Would be back sometime.

We were really excited to take a hiking trip to Wildcat Den State Park. The trails were well maintained with lots of spots to sit and rest. There was so much to look at, the rock formative were beautiful- reminded me of Ledges and Dolliver. Hope to come back again to check out Cave Trail, which was closed at the time of our visit. The park was very busy, but we came on a weekend. If you are looking for solitude, maybe try a weekday. Despite the crowds on the trail and at the park/picnic benches there wasn't any trash or litter, and the historical sites/grist mill were interesting to see and tour. Getting to go inside the mill was a bonus, I hadn't realized it was open. This was a great place to catch some beautiful Iowa landscape, and be reminded that Iowa isn't so flat after all.

Wildcat Den State Park is amazing with great hiking trails a grist mill. The punch bowl section of the trail was really cool with awesome rock formations. The 5+ miles of trails were well-maintained and in great condition. The trails had a lot of ups and downs which provided a good challenge.

This park has the coolest rock formations, seen best taking Punch Bowl trail. You can get to Mill by trail, Mill Trail connects with other trails. When map says trails are “hard” it’s due to steep staircases, not length. Trails are well maintained and entirely shaded. Very impressed with this state park.

This is a beautiful State Park in Muscatine,Iowa. The trails are wide, the Punch Bowl Trail is fantastic. The Grist Mill is fun to walk through, lots of information on how a Grist Mill operated. Stunning views throughout the park. It is definitely worth a visit.
