Willamette/Black Canyon Campground

Overview

Black Canyon Campground offers a quintessential Pacific Northwest experience nestled within the Willamette National Forest. Located just west of Oakridge, this destination provides a lush forest canopy and immediate access to the Middle Fork Willamette River. It is a preferred spot for travelers who value natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere over resort-style luxuries. The campground is well-regarded for its spacious sites and the cooling shade provided by towering Douglas firs and western hemlocks, creating a tranquil environment for all visitors.

Location & Surroundings

Situated along the scenic Highway 58 corridor, the campground sits at the edge of the Middle Fork Willamette River and is near the upper end of Lookout Point Reservoir. The surroundings are defined by deep green ferns and moss-covered trees, creating a secluded feel despite its convenient highway accessibility. Being in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, the area serves as a gateway to high-elevation lakes and rugged wilderness areas, making it a prime basecamp for exploring the diverse natural wonders of Lane County.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service facility, Black Canyon prioritizes the outdoor environment. While there are no electricity or water hookups, the park features paved parking pads that can accommodate various RV lengths, with some sites reaching up to 45 feet. Amenities include:

  • Centrally located potable water spigots and vault toilets.
  • Individual campsites equipped with fire rings and heavy-duty picnic tables.
  • A convenient boat ramp nearby for easy access to the reservoir.
  • Several riverside campsites offering direct views and sounds of the water.

The layout is designed to provide generous spacing and privacy between sites, ensuring a quiet stay for RVers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities surrounding the park. Oakridge is famously known as the Mountain Biking Capital of the Northwest, with hundreds of miles of singletrack trails located just minutes away. Anglers frequently visit for the excellent trout fishing, while boaters enjoy the calm waters of the reservoir. For a scenic day trip, the stunning Salt Creek Falls, one of Oregon’s tallest waterfalls, is a short drive up the pass, offering breathtaking views and accessible hiking paths for all skill levels.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal match for self-contained RVers and nature enthusiasts who prefer a rustic, off-the-grid style of camping. It is perfect for mountain bikers looking for a staging ground near world-class trails and families who want to spend their days fishing or splashing in the river. I really enjoyed our camping trip last weekend. We didn't see any racoons but we did see the cutest little chipmunks! Our kids loved playing in the river. The train at night is really the only downside.

Wish the website had better info on camping-style of this campground, it is tent camping ,bathrooms very clean, campsites are tent sites we showed up with a trailer, I wish the website would have said that. the sites are nicely spaced out but the highway and the train track are so close it makes it extremely noisy site 72 was supposed to be double parking as you can see in the photo there is no room to park a second vehicle side-by-side, the lake was drained could not use any boat launches again not enough info on the website

Gorgeous gorgeous campground. Will definitely be staying here again. River access, and just nestled among the beautiful trees. Stayed in site 073.

Nice campground along the Willamette River. Our site was number 42, hard to find but very large and no visible neighbors. No flush toilets and had to hike a ways to pit toilets from our site. Also a bit noisy with road traffic and trains.

Peaceful, and free but most sites are closed, I don't know for how long.
