Willamette/Sacandaga Campground

Overview

The Willamette/Sacandaga Campground offers a peaceful escape into the lush landscapes of the Willamette National Forest. Situated along the scenic Middle Fork Willamette River, this Forest Service gem provides a classic Oregon camping experience. Visitors come here to trade the noise of the city for the gentle rush of the water and the whispering of ancient trees. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate a traditional camping atmosphere away from more commercialized RV parks.

Location & Surroundings

Located just south of the mountain biking capital of Oakridge, Oregon, the park is nestled within a dense canopy of Douglas fir and Western Red Cedar. The campground sits at an elevation that keeps it cool during the summer months, with easy access to the riverbanks. The surrounding terrain is characterized by steep forested ridges and crystal-clear mountain streams, making it a prime destination for nature photography and wildlife viewing.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a rustic facility designed for dry camping, so visitors should come prepared. While there are no electricity or sewer hookups, the well-spaced sites offer a sense of privacy. The campground provides the following essentials for a comfortable off-grid stay:

  • Vault toilets maintained by the Forest Service
  • Potable water available via a traditional hand pump
  • Individual sites with heavy-duty picnic tables and fire rings

It is important to note that many sites are best suited for smaller RVs and camper vans due to the natural layout of the forest environment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, as the area is famous for its world-class mountain biking trails. Just a short drive away, you can visit the stunning Salt Creek Falls, one of Oregon's highest waterfalls, or soak in the natural pools at McCredie Hot Springs. Anglers will enjoy fly fishing on the Middle Fork Willamette River, while hikers can explore the nearby Waldo Lake Wilderness. The proximity to Oakridge allows for easy supply runs and local dining.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is perfect for travelers who prioritize solitude and outdoor recreation over modern luxury. If you enjoy unplugging without cell service or Wi-Fi, you will find peace here. It is a fantastic choice for active couples and families who use their RV as a basecamp for hiking and biking. Because of the primitive nature of the sites, it is best for those who are self-contained and comfortable with a more rugged, authentic forest experience.

Not great. Water in the pump is brown, when it works. River is difficult/dangerous to get to.

Very quiet campground and reasonably priced especially if you have a federal park pass. River access isn’t that great but you can get down there

The area has a magic about it. I stumbled onto it while exploring with my daughter. She's been in love with the outdoors because of places like this.

If you want a quiet campground for tents that is low key, this may be for you. Pro's: pretty drive to get there, quiet, low key. Con's: mosquitos, small sites, ? water supply. Forest service says no water available and a camping site said no potable water. There is a pump with water, though we brought our own and a filter. Sites 9, 11 could be combined for a large family. The sites are walk up, first come first served. Two trails are marked to the river though one seems to end in brambles. There is a rocky beach type area at the second trail. Two nights was about perfect. Enjoy!
